LAS VEGAS - Led by home runs by senior third baseman Emma Blauser and sophomore first baseman Emily Benson, Western Washington University Softball team completed its opening week of the season with a come-from-behind 7-4 victory over No. 21 Regis in the final day of the Desert Stinger Softball Classic hosted by Montana State Billings.
The Vikings (3-2) trailed 4-0 through the top of the 5th inning, with the Rangers scoring a pair of runs in the 3rd and 5th innings, with all runs coming on a pair of two-run home runs by senior pitcher Nicole Aviles.
WWU started on the comeback trail in the bottom half of the 5th inning when Blauser (Federal Way, WA/Todd Beamer) got the Vikings on the board with a one-out solo home run (her second of the season) to left field. After Kali Patterson (Jr., Bonney Lake, WA) and Alexie Levin (Sr., Everett, WA) drew walks, Benson (West Richland, WA/Kamiakin) drilled a 2-0 pitch deep over the center field fence to tie the game with the 3-run home run (2nd of the season).
After freshman pitcher Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) stranded the potential go-ahead run in scoring position in the top of the 6th, the Vikings forged ahead with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Patterson plated the go-ahead run with a 2-out single to center field to score Carlie Richards (So., Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin) and Levin followed with a 2-run triple to right-center to extend the lead to 7-4.
Benson went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and junior catcher Lynsey Amundson (Arlington, WA) was 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings at the plate.
Levin went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI and a pair of walks, and finished the 5-game tournament batting .571 (8-for-14) with 3 doubles, 1 triple, 7 RBI and a 1.517 OPS (.929 SLG, .588 OBP). Blauser hit a team-high .583 (7-for-12) with 6 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 3 RBI.
Labasan (2-1) recorded the win scattering 4 hits and 2 runs in 3.1 innings. Starter Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) recorded a no-decision allowing 3 hits and 2 runs in 3.0 innings.
Aviles led the Rangers at the plate (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and recorded the loss with a complete game allowing 9 hits and 7 runs in (4 BB, 5 SO).
The Vikings return to action next weekend with five games at the Dixie State Tournament in Saint George, Utah. WWU opens tournament play Friday with games against Hawai'i Hilo (10 am MT/9 am PT) and Cal Baptist (12:30 pm MT/11:30 am PT).
