BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Led by a complete-game effort by freshman pitcher Shearyna Labasan and a balanced offensive attack the Western Washington Vikings defeated Western Oregon 5-2 Monday morning in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball game at Viking Field.
WWU snapped its season-high four-game losing streak to even the season record at 12-12 overall and 7-7 in GNAC play. Western Oregon had its mini three-game winning streak snapped to fall to 10-11 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) improved to 8-4 on the season scattering 5 hits and 2 runs while recording her sixth complete game of the season.
The Vikings out-hit the Wolves 8-5, but did not record an extra-base hit in the victory. Sophomore shortstop Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and sophomore first baseman Emily Benson (West Richland, WA/Kamiakin) went 2-for-4 to extend her hitting streak to a career-high 9 consecutive games.
WWU wasted little time getting on the board with a single tally in the bottom half of the first inning. Designated player Jordan Walley (Maple Valley, WA/Tahoma) had a run-scoring fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
After adding another run in the 2nd inning on a sac fly by sophomore left fielder Sarah Morrow (Enumclaw, WA), the Vikings cushioned their lead to 5-0 with 3 runs in the 3rd inning. Sellevold tabbed a run-scoring infield single and junior second baseman Kali Patterson (Bonney Lake, WA) provided the big blow with a two-out, two-run single to center field.
The Wolves scored two runs late against Labasan, who was otherwise untouched. After recording 13 hits and 11 runs yesterday, WOU was limited to just 5 hits in Monday's contest.
The Vikings return to action with a pair of GNAC games tomorrow at Central Washington (1 & 3 pm), a rescheduled date from rainouts on March 13. The Vikings will also travel to Billings, Mont., this weekend for four games (Friday & Saturday) vs. Montana State Billings.
