TURLOCK, Calif. - Led by a complete-game effort by freshman pitcher Shearyna Labasan and a three-hit game by junior second baseman Kali Patterson the Western Washington Vikings beat Sonoma State 5-3 Thursday afternoon in a non-conference softball game at Warrior Softball field.
The Vikings improved to 17-16 overall and 2-1 on their current 9-game California road swing. WWU will play six games over the next three days in the Tournament of Champions hosted by the City of Turlock.
Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) improved to 9-5 on the season and recorded her seventh complete game allowing 8 hits (all singles) and 3 runs (2 ER) in 7.0 innings.
The Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind a single tally in the 3rd inning and four runs in the top of the 4th. Senior Emma Blauser (Federal Way, WA/Todd Beamer) opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate senior Arianna Barrio (Stanwood, WA/Lakewood) with the first run.
WWU stretched its lead with the four-run 4th inning, with Patterson (Bonney Lake, WA) providing the big hit with a two-run, two-out double to right field. The double was Patterson's 7th of the season, tying for the team lead.
Labasan allowed a pair of runs in the 4th and one in the 6th, but was otherwise brilliant in holding the Seawolves without an extra-base hit in the contest.
SSU leadoff hitter Alee Balanon led the Seawolves going 3-for-3. Starting pitcher Brielle Vidmar (5-1) recorded her first loss of the season allowing 3 hits and 5 runs (2 ER) in 4.0 innings.
The Vikings open TOC action tomorrow with games against UC San Diego (11:30 am) and Dominican (4:30 pm) in Turlock.
