April 14, 2016 NORWALK, Calif. - Western Washington senior Matt Lutz shattered the 27-year-old school record in the 3,000m Steeplechase Thursday evening at the Mt. Sac Relays held at Cerritos College.
Lutz (Bremerton, WA/Olympic) finished 4th in the 53-athlete field clocking the first sub 9-minute steeplechase finish in school history at 8:59.97. He broke the 27-year-old school record of 9:10.67 set by Kirby White in 1989, one of the longest standing marks in the WWU record book. His time is also just the third this season at the Division II level to go sub 9:00 and is 4th-best in GNAC history.
Junior Andrew Wise (Denver, CO/East) also had a banner performance finishing 16th in the stacked field in 9:11.08. Wise improved his NCAA II provisional qualifying mark by recording the 3rd-fastest time in school history.
The Vikings Track & Field program continues a busy weekend tomorrow with action at the Mt. Sac Relays (Norwalk, CA), Long Beach State Invitational (Long Beach, CA) and the Oregon Relays (Eugene, OR).
