Vikings Go 1-1 At Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. - For the second consecutive day, Western Washington sophomore Makinlee Sellevold powered the Vikings to a win, throwing a complete-game 4-hitter and driving in all four runs in a 4-2 win over San Francisco State during the second day of the Tournament of Champions presented by the City of Turlock.

The Vikings were defeated by Azusa Pacific 8-2 in the second game to go 1-1 during the second day of the 26-team tournament to improve to 20-17 on the season (3-1 overall in the TOC). WWU has won 8 of its last 11 games, and had a season-high 4-game winning streak snapped in the loss to APU.

Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) recorded the complete-game victory in the win over San Francisco State (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 SO) to improve to 8-7 on the season. She was also 2-for-3 with a 2-run home runs (#3 of the season) and drove in all 4 runs in the game.

The Vikings complete play in the Tournament of Champions presented by the City of Turlock with games against Cal State East Bay (9 am) and Cal State Monterey Bay (2 pm).

Makinlee Sellevold hit a two-run home run in the 4th inning for what ended up as the game-winning runs and threw a complete game to pick up her 8th win of the season in WWU's 4-2 win over San Francisco State in the first game of the day.

With the victory the Vikings extended their winning streak to a season-high four consecutive games.

Trailing 1-0, Sellevold homered to left-center field on a 2-0 pitch with one out in the bottom of the 4th inning to give the Vikings the lead. Sellevold added to the lead with a two-run double in the 6th inning.

The Gators made things interesting in the 7th inning, loading the bases with one out, but the game ended on a 7-5-3-2 double play.

Sellevold went 2-for-3 with 4 RBI at the plate, and on the mound scattered 4 hits and allowed 2 runs while recording her 12th complete game of the season.

Senior third baseman Emma Blauser (Federal Way, WA/Todd Beamer) also recorded a multi-hit game going 2-for-3.

The Vikings had their season-high four-game winning streak snapped in an 8-2 loss to Azusa Pacific in the second game of the day at the Tournament of Champions. WWU tied a season high committing 5 errors in the loss.

The Cougars broke open a scoreless game with a six-run 3rd inning, which included three WWU errors to lead to 5 unearned runs.

Starter Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) took the loss falling to 10-6 on the season after allowing 5 hits and 6 runs (1 ER) in 2.1 innings. Reliever Aspen Ison (Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula) was effective out of the bullpen limiting APU to 4 hits and 2 runs in 4.2 innings.

Leadoff hitter Kali Patterson (Bonney Lake, WA) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and senior center fielder Arianna Barrio (Stanwood, WA/Lakewood) was 3-for-4. Blauser went 1-for-2 and connected on her 7th home run of the season (13th of her career).
