BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Senior Travis Milbrandt improved his own meet record in the men's 110 hurdles and senior Bethany Drake improved her own school record in the women's javelin, highlighting Western Washington University performances Saturday in the Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet at Civic Stadium.
Milbrandt (Longview, WA/Mark Morris) won the 110 hurdles in 14.25, knocking 0.16 seconds off the meet mark he set last year.
Drake (Sandy, OR) was second in the javelin with a throw of 52.29m/171' 7", an improvement of more than two feet over the school record she set in 2014. Drake's mark is 10th-best in NCAA Division II history. Krista Woodward, a former Canadian record holder in the event, won with a meet record toss of 54.69m/179' 5".
Other top performances from the meet included the following:
- Sophomore J.T. Konrad (Spokane, WA/Mead) became just the second Viking in school history to clear 16 feet in the men's pole vault, winning the event with a clearance of 16' 4.75" achieving a provisional NCAA qualifying mark and improving his personal-best by 10 ½ inches.
- Konrad led a 1-2-4 finish in the pole vault, with Jacob Hino (Jr., Yakima, WA/Eisenhower) finishing 2nd at 4.85m/15' 11" (T3rd in WWU history) and Gordie Kordas (Jr., Blaine, WA) tying for 3rd clearing 4.40m/14' 5.25".
- Senior Kevin Yates (Snohomish, WA) broke a 25-year old meet record in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.19m/23' 7.25". Senior Nathaniel Van Tuinen (Yakima/Riverside Christian/Spokane CC) was 2nd (6.92m/22' 8.5").
- Junior Megan Mortensen (Tacoma, WA/Franklin Pierce) improved her provisional qualifying mark in the women's discus, finishing 2nd at 47.36m/155' 4", just 10 inches short of the WWU record.
- Freshman Alex Barry (Sequim, WA) improved his provisional qualifying mark in the javelin, placing 2nd at 61.46m/201' 8".
- Other event winners for the WWU men: Senior Mark Seely (Spokane, WA/Central Valley) in the triple jump (46-10), senior Matt Lutz (Bremerton, WA/Olympic) in the 5,000 meters (15:11.60), senior Ryan Peterson (Seattle, WA/Garfield) in the 10,000 meters (32:51.2), and the 4x100 relay team (42.23).
- The Western women won both the 4x100 (48.69) and 4x400 (3:59.90). Freshman Cheyenne Konrad (Spokane, WA/Mead) and senior Veronica Ivancic (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) ran legs on both teams.
- Meet records by non-WWU athletes: Channell Botsis of Kajaks in the women's hammer (56.99m/187'), George Natan of Coquitlam Cheetahs in the men's 400 (46.9), Bernari Sternen of Central Washington in the men's 400 hurdles (53.06).
- Allanah Whitehall of Puget Sound was a double winner in the women's 100 (12.15) and 200 (25.12).
- James Linde of Coquitlam Cheetahs won the men's 100 (10.78) and 200 (21.37).
