ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The No. 14 Western Washington women's volleyball team was dealt a three-game loss (27-29, 22-25, 22-25) against No. 15 Cal State San Bernardino in the final match of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase.
The Vikings (4-4) finished the tournament 3-1 with wins over Dixie State (3-0), Sonoma State (3-0) and No. 25 California Baptist (3-2). Tonight was a rematch of the 2015 NCAA II West Region final in which the Vikings defeated the Coyotes 3-2 to earn a trip to the Elite 8 in Tampa, Florida.
"This was a disappointing end to a pretty good tournament," said 17th-year head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "We have learned a lot about what we need to work on and change. And the goal is implementation in the conference season."
Sophomore middle blocker Kayleigh Harper (Oak Harbor, WA) led the Vikings with 10 kills on a .381 hitting percentage (10-2-21) and added a pair of blocks for 11.0 points. Sophomore Abby Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) also recorded 11.0 points with 9 kills, 1 service ace and 2 block assists. Redshirt freshman Kazlyn Roullier (Spokane Valley, WA/Central Valley) added 8 kills and a career-high 4 blocks.
The Vikings tailed 16-11 midway through the first set and 22-18 late, but battled back to tie the game at 22-22 and eventually took the lead at 23-22 on a kill from Buckner. Each team staved off a pair of set points before the Coyotes outlasted the Vikings for the 29-27 win. CSUB hit .245 for the set, while WWU was limited to a .172 mark. Harper and Turner each totaled 4 kills for Western.
CSUSB (6-2) took the next two games 25-22 to secure the three-set victory. Malika O'Brien (13 kills, .478), Lauren Nicholson (12 kills, 10 digs) and Hailey Jackson (12 kills, 3 blocks) led the Coyotes.
