BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington sophomore outside hitter Abby Phelps recorded another double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs to lead the 20th-ranked Vikings to a 3-0 sweep over the University of Alaska Saturday night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match at Whatcom Pavilion.
WWU evened its season record at 6-6 overall and 2-2 in GNAC play with the victory. Alaska falls to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) led all players with 10 kills (on a .381 hitting percentage) and tied for the match high with 14 digs while recording her eighth double-double of the season. She also had three blocks to finish with 12.0 points.
Junior Arielle Turner (Leavenworth, WA/Cascade) totaled a team-high 13.5 points with 8 kills, 3 service aces and tied her career with 4 blocks.
The Vikings jumped out to an early lead taking the first set 25-16. WWU trailed 11-9, but responded with a 6-0 run to take a 15-11 lead and never looked back outscoring the Nanooks 16-5 over the remainder of the set. Turner and Phelps each had 3 kills in the opening set.
The second set was very similar with the Vikings pulling away with a sizeable run on the way to a 25-21 win. With the set tied 13-13, Western went on a 4-0 run that proved to be a big enough cushion to pull away with the set to go up 2-0. Turner led a balanced Western offensive attack with 3 kills and Harper recorded 4 blocks.
WWU closed out the match with a convincing 25-14 third set, led by 5 kills and 4 digs by Phelps.
Alaska was led by 7 kills apiece from Angela Molesworth and Kim Wong.
The Vikings (6-6 overall, 2-2 GNAC) return to conference play on the road next week facing Concordia in Portland on Thursday (7 pm) and Western Oregon on Saturday (7 pm).
