FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. - The Western Washington University men's and women's cross country teams turned in strong performances with the men placing 5th and the women 6th in their respective divisions of the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, hosted by the University of Minnesota at Les Bolstad Golf Course.

The Vikings also sent teams to compete at the Saint Martin's Open on Saturday in Lacey, Wash., with both WWU teams placing 2nd in their respective divisions.

The WWU women, ranked No. 8 nationally, totaled 210 points at the Roy Griak Invitational to place 6th of 40 teams in the Women's Maroon Division II 6-kilometer race and finished a single point behind 5th-place UC San Diego. The University of Mary (93 points) won the team title, edging two-time defending champion Minnesota-Duluth (95 points).

The Vikings were led by senior Brittany Grant (Port Townsend, WA) who placed 15th in 23.29.9. Junior Lillianna Stelling (Langley, WA/South Whidbey) placed 27th (24:00.1) and freshman Sophia Galvez (Los Alamos, NM) crossed the line in 42nd place with a time of 24:18.2 to give WWU a trio of placers among the top 50. All seven of the WWU racers finished within the top 150 of a field featuring roughly 400 competitors.

The No. 14-ranked WWU men placed 5th among 40 teams at the Roy Griak Invitational in the Men's Maroon Division II 8-kilometer race with 154 points, led by a pair of top-10 placers. The Vikings finished 2 points behind the University of Manitoba in 4th place and 5 points back of Black Hills State in 3rd place. Augustana (S.D) was the team champion on the men's side (88 points).

Junior Isaac Derline (Kent, WA/Kentridge) was 6th in 26:18.6 for WWU while junior Andrew Wise (Denver, CO/East) was 10th with a time of 26:27.3. All five of the scoring finishers for the Vikings were among the top 70 in a field of more than 450.

"It was a great environment," said 30th-year head coach Pee Wee Halsell of the Roy Griak Invitational. "A big meet setting, lots of people, atmosphere was great, a great course - muddy course - and it was fun. And that's what we need - we need those big meet settings and I think this will pay huge dividends down the line."

Freshman Peyton Shinnick (Maple Valley, WA/Tahoma) was the top finisher for the Vikings at the SMU Open in the 5-kilometer race, placing 13th in 19:19.50 to lead six WWU harriers who placed among the top 25. The WWU women totaled 62 points, finishing 2nd of 11 teams. Seattle Pacific (22 points) took home the team title.

Freshman Peter Butler (Port Angeles, WA) led the Viking men in the 8-kilometer race at SMU, placing 4th in a time of 26:27.10. Sophomore Dylan Hayes (Seattle, WA/Garfield) also placed among the top 10, with a 6th-place finish in 26:28.00. WWU produced four finishers among the top 20 and finished with 76 points, placing 2nd of 13 behind only Lane CC (67 points).

The Vikings will not compete next weekend but return to action Oct. 8, hosting the 43rd Annual WWU Classic at East Lake Padden Park (10 am).
