ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Sophomore middle blocker Kayleigh Harper recorded a match-high 12 kills and added 6 blocks to lead the No. 14 Western Washington Vikings to a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-14, 25-22) of Dixie State Thursday afternoon on the first day of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase.
The Vikings improved to 2-3 on the young season with the convincing sweep. All three of WWU's defeats this season have come against top 25 teams, including a pair of losses against top-ranked Concordia-St. Paul.
"I was really happy with how we came out today and not just got the win, but played really well in doing so," said 17th-year head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "We put some pressure on them early from the service line and didn't let up. I hope we can carry this energy into the rest of our games down here."
Harper (Oak Harbor, WA) controlled the match on offense and defense, registering a .435 hitting percentage (12 kills, 2 errors, 23 attempts) to go along with her 6 blocks.
"Kayleigh had an outstanding match and really controlled the tempo for us," added Flick-Williams.
Sophomore Abby Phelps (Manson, WA/Chelan) recorded her fourth consecutive double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Senior libero Bryce Larson (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) had a match-high 22 digs and sophomore setter Brette Boesel (Brewster, WA) tallied 24 assists, 10 digs and a pair of service aces.
Dixie State (2-2) was led by 6 kills from Delayne Daniel.
WWU returns to action tomorrow with two more matches in the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase hosted by Sonoma State University. The Vikings will face tournament host Sonoma State (10 am) and No. 25 Cal Baptist (5:30 pm) tomorrow, and close out play with No. 15 Cal State San Bernardino (Saturday, 5 pm).
