Box Score (G#1) | Box Score (G#2)

LAIE, Hawai'i -- The Western Washington University softball team concluded its season-opening trip to Hawai'i with a doubleheader sweep of BYU-Hawai'i on Tuesday, earning a pair of come-from-behind wins at the BYU-Hawai'i Softball Field.

WWU won game one, 4-2, taking the lead with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the 6th inning before using a 4-run 8th inning to pull away from the Seasiders for a 7-3 extra-inning victory during game two.

WWU concluded its season-opening trip to Hawai'i 5-1 while BYU-Hawai'i fell to 0-2.

Sophomore starting pitcher Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) tied her career high with 9 strikeouts while improving to 2-0 with a complete game effort during the opener before freshman starting pitcher Anna Kasner (Milton, WA/Fife) followed with a complete game in game two, recording 13 strikeouts for the second consecutive start.

Labasan also went 5-for-9 at the plate on Tuesday. Kasner has totaled 32 strikeouts and a 0.78 ERA over 18 innings pitched (2 starts, 1 relief appearance) during the young season.

Junior first baseman Emily Benson (West Richland, WA/Kamiakin) went 3-for-7 for 4 RBI and 3 runs on Tuesday, hitting a home run in each game to tie the program record for career home runs with 22. She is tied with Meghan Flem, who hit 22 home runs from 2007-10.

Junior third baseman Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) went 6-for-8 during the doubleheader with an RBI and 2 runs while freshman outfielder Mackenzie Palmer (Federal Way, WA/Todd Beamer) was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and a run in the second game.

WWU continues the non-conference schedule later in the week, traveling from Hawai'i to Utah for the Dixie State Tournament. The Vikings will face five teams in Saint George, Utah, from Thursday to Saturday. On Thursday, WWU will open the tournament opposing Cal Baptist (10 am MT/9 am PT) and Western New Mexico (12:30 pm MT/11:30 am PT).

Box Score

Shearyna Labasan threw a complete game with 9 strikeouts and solo home runs in the top of the 6th inning from Emily Benson and senior Mackenzie Hughes (Ellensburg, WA) helped lift WWU in game one.

The Vikings fought back from an early deficit as BYU-Hawai'i scored twice in the bottom of the 1st inning, using a pair of hits and a defensive miscue by the Vikings in the frame. Both runs scored on a throwing error during a stolen base attempt with runners on first and third.

A two-out single from junior Carlie Richards (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin) tied the game 2-2 in the top of the 4th inning. Benson and Makinlee Sellevold had back-to-back singles to begin the inning, and both scored when Richards' single up the middle was mishandled by the centerfielder.

Benson broke the 2-2 tie with her home run to center field leading off the 6th inning. Hughes sent her 1st home run of the year, and 2nd of her career, to left-center field with one out in the inning to double the WWU lead.

Labasan improved to 2-0, matching her career high of 9 strikeouts first achieved against Hawai'i Hilo on Feb. 12, 2016. She allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits with 2 walks, retiring the final 8 batters she faced. Labasan also helped lead WWU offensively, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate while batting leadoff for the first time in her career.

Benson went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and an RBI while Sellevold finished 2-for-3 with a run.

The Seasiders responded to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a 2-run home run with two outs from Lizabelle Talataina.
