Vikings Have Strong Showing at Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Western Washington University track & field program posted five NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks and claimed seven event wins at the two-day Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open held at Clackamas Community College and Lewis & Clark College on Friday and Saturday.

The WWU men placed 1st of 19 teams with 137 points ahead of George Fox University in 2nd with 111 points. The WWU women placed 2nd of 18 with 82.5 points behind Oregon State (177 points).

For the women, senior Brittany Grant (Distance, Port Townsend, WA) ran a provisional time of 11:04.36 in winning the 3,000m steeplechase. Senior Jasmine McMullin (Jumps, Sequim, WA) won the triple jump with a provisional mark of 11.85m (38-10 ½).

Sophomore Anna Paradee (Pole Vault, Tacoma, WA/Decatur), competing in her first meet since a 7th-place All-American finish at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, cleared 3.75m (12-3 ½) to place 3rd with a provisional height. Her effort was a personal-best and ranks 3rd on the WWU all-time top 10 list.

On the men's side, sophomore Alex Barry (Throws, Sequim, WA) won the javelin, which took place Friday, with a provisional mark of 58.66m (192-5 ¾). Junior Brandon Pless (Throws, Sedro-Woolley, WA) also posted a provisional mark on Friday with a toss of 54.98m/180-4 ¾) in the hammer throw, placing 5th. The mark for Pless was a personal-best to rank 3rd on the WWU all-time top 10 list.

Pless also recorded a personal-best WWU top 10 mark in the discus on Saturday with a toss of 48.13m (157-11 ¼) to rank 8th on the top 10 list and won the shot put with a mark 15.89m (52-1 ¾).

In addition to 1st-place finishes from Grant, McMullin, Barry and Pless, the WWU women's 4x100m relay team placed 1st with a time of 48.71. For the men, junior Adam Thomas (Pole Vault, Washougal, WA) won the pole vault at a height of 3.61 (15-1 ½), winning a tiebreaker over senior Gordie Kordas (Pole Vault, Blaine, WA) who cleared the same height and placed 2nd. Senior Kevin Yates (Jumps, Snohomish, WA) took top honors in the long jump with a mark of 7.11m (23-4).

Overall, WWU posted 28 top-5 finishes over the course of the meet.

The Vikings will next compete at the Seattle Pacific University Doris Heritage Distance Festival on Saturday, March 25.
