TURLOCK, Calif. - The Western Washington University softball team completed a perfect first day of the 2017 Tournament of Champions beating San Francisco State 3-1 on Friday evening at the Pedretti Sports Complex.
After snapping a five-game losing streak with a 12-0 win over Academy of Art earlier in the day, the Vikings used a complete-game effort from freshman pitcher Anna Kasner (Milton, WA/Fife) and clutch hitting to improve to 14-11 on the season. San Francisco State falls to 13-21 with the loss.
Kasner (7-5) scattered 6 hits and allowed only one run while tossing her ninth complete game of the season. The freshman struck out 6 and did not walk a batter to lower her season ERA to 2.89. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate helping her own cause with the game-winning RBI with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Leadoff hitter Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored out of the leadoff spot, completing the day 4-for-6 with 4 runs scored.
Junior third baseman Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and was 4-for-6 for the day.
WWU will play UC San Diego (11:30 am) and Holy Names (2 pm) tomorrow in the second of three days of the 26-team, 77-game Tournament of Champions. The Vikings will close out tournament play Sunday playing Cal State San Bernardino (10 am) and No. 7 Chico State (12:30 pm).

Game Notes: Carlie Richards and Makinlee Sellevold both extended their hitting streaks to 8 consecutive games...Sellevold has reached base safely in each of her last 15 games...Anna Kasner now has 109 strikeouts on the season (14 G/13 GS), moving into 7th place in the WWU single-season record books...Emily Benson recorded her 102nd RBI, 5th-best in WWU history, and one away from the 4th spot in program history.
