STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomore Anna Paradee improved upon her NCAA II provisional-qualifying height in the pole vault with the No. 2 mark in WWU top 10 history while senior Bethany Drake posted a provisional-qualifying mark in the javelin throw as the Western Washington University track & field program competed at the Stanford Invitational on Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
WWU also had competitors in action on Friday at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, hosted at Cox Stadium. Senior Brittany Grant (Distance, Port Townsend, WA) improved upon her provisional-qualifying time in the 3,000m steeplechase at the distance carnival in recording the 2nd-fastest time in WWU top 10 history. Senior Mark Seely (Jumps, Spokane, WA/Central Valley) led a 1-2 finish for WWU in the triple jump while senior Jasmine McMullin (Jumps, Sequim, WA) won the long jump in San Francisco.
Paradee (Pole Vault, Tacoma, WA/Decatur) tied for 5th at the Stanford Invitational with a mark of 3.80m (12-5 ½) for an outdoor personal-best height to improve upon her previous top mark of 3.75m (12-3 ½) set earlier in the month. Her height also ranks 4th in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history and 6th nationally.
Drake (Throws, Sandy, OR), a two-time All-American and the 2014 javelin national champion, made her season debut with a provisional-qualifying distance of 46.30m (151-11) to place 5th at Stanford. Her mark is the No. 2 distance nationally during the current season.
Junior Brandon Pless (Throws, Sedro-Woolley, WA) and senior Kevin Yates (Jumps, Snohomish, WA) also competed at Stanford on Friday. Pless recorded a mark of 53.30m (174-10) to place 5th in the hammer throw. His season-best hammer throw distance of 54.98m (180- 4 ½) is a provisional-qualifying effort. Yates placed 11th in the long jump with a distance of 6.76m (22-2 ¼).
Grant (Distance, Port Townsend, WA) finished 5th in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:32.60 to better her season-best time of 11:04.36 as well as her previous personal-best of 10:44.38 set during the 2016 season. Her time is 6th-best in GNAC history and ranks 3rd nationally. She was the top NCAA Division II finisher in the race.
McMullin won the long jump with a leap of 5.70m (18-8 ½) to record a wind-aided personal-best mark. Senior Miranda Osadchey (Dupont, WA/Steilacoom) followed in 8th with a personal-best mark of 5.26m (17-3 ¼). McMullin also placed 2nd in the triple jump with a distance of 11.62m (38-1 ½) while Osadchey added a 6th-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.59m (5-2 ½).
Seely picked up the event victory in his season debut with a leap of 14.01m (45-11 ¾) in the long jump. Junior Somit Chhim (Jumps, Kelso, WA) was 2nd with a distance of 13.60m (44-7 ½).
Junior Adam Thomas (Pole Vault, Washougal, WA) was 3rd with a height of 4.47m (14-8) in the pole vault while senior Andrew Wise (Distance, Denver, CO/East) narrowly missed a provisional time in the 3,000m steeplechase, placing 24th in 9:18.79. Senior Cody McCranie (Auburn, WA) finished 50th in the 1,500m with a time of 3:59.61.
The Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State Distance Carnival continue Saturday with five Vikings scheduled to compete at Stanford and four at San Francisco. WWU will also be competing at the University of Puget Sound Shotwell Invitational on Saturday in Tacoma, Wash.
