TURLOCK, Calif. -- Junior catcher Carlie Richards went 2-for-2 with 3 RBI and sophomore starting pitcher Shearyna Labasan allowed only 2 hits over 4.0 scoreless innings to lead the Western Washington Vikings to a 12-0 victory in 5 innings over Academy of Art Friday afternoon at Pedretti Sports Complex in the Tournament of Champions.
Western scored a season-high 12 runs while snapping a five-game losing streak to improve to 13-11 on the season. AAU falls to 16-18 on the season.
Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) improved to 5-2 on the season allowing only two baserunners in the game (both singles). She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and 2 RBI.
Junior third baseman Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and sophomore center fielder McKenna Mathis (Mesa, WA/Connell) was 2-for-2 with a double and 2 RBI.
The Vikings held a 3-0 lead through the first 3 innings, before an 8-run outburst in the top of the 4th inning put the game out of reach. Richards (Richland, WA/Kamiakin) got the scoring started with an 2-out infield single in the top of the 2nd and Mathis had a 2-out, 2-run double in the 3rd inning to extend the lead to 3-0. The Vikings sent 13 batters to the plate in the 8-run 4th frame.
Western continues play in the Tournament of Champions with one more game tonight playing San Francisco State at 7 pm.
WWU will play UC San Diego (11:30 am) and Holy Names (2 pm) tomorrow in the second of three days of the 26-team, 77-game Tournament of Champions.
