TURLOCK, Calif. - The Western Washington University softball team split a pair of games on Saturday at Pedretti Park during the second day of the 2017 Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State.
The Vikings defeated UC San Diego 1-0 behind a complete-game shutout by sophomore Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll).
Holy Names handed WWU a 7-6 defeat in the afternoon game, as the Vikings fall to 3-1 in the Tournament of Champions and 15-12 on the season.
WWU concludes play in the 26-team, 77-game Tournament of Champions on Sunday with games against Cal State San Bernardino (10 am) and No. 7 Chico State (12:30 pm).
Sophomore starting pitcher Shearyna Labasan threw a 3-hit shutout leading the Vikings to a 1-0 victory over UC San Diego in the first game of the day.
Senior second baseman Kali Patterson (Bonney Lake, WA) drilled a two-out double in the bottom of the 4th inning to score Emily Benson (West Richland, WA/Kamiakin) with the lone run of the game.
Labasan fought off a pair of late UCSD rallies to preserve her third career shutout. In the top of the 6th inning, with one out and runners on second and third base, she got a strikeout and fly out to get out of the jam. UCSD led off the top of the 7th with a double, and had the tying run on third base with one out before Labasan struck out the last two batters to seal the victory.
UCSD evened its season record at 17-17 with the loss, falling to 1-7 all-time vs. the Vikings.

Game Notes: Carlie Richards extended her hitting streak to a career-high 9 consecutive games...Kali Patterson's double that scored the game-winning run was the 28th of her career, 6th-most in program history (5th is 30 doubles)...the 1-0 victory was the 31st in program history and first since March 15, 2014 (G#1) vs. Saint Martin's.
The Vikings held an early 3-1 lead, but Holy Names scored in each of the first five innings of the game to come from behind to defeat WWU 7-6.
Western trailed 7-4 heading into the 6th inning, but junior Carlie Richards (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin) closed the gap to one run with a two-out, two-run pinch-hit single.
The Vikings put the potential tying run on base with Kali Patterson led off the 7th inning with a single, but pinch-runner Jackie Lucido (San Jose, CA/Piedmont Hills) was called out for leaving first base early.
Junior first baseman Emily Benson (West Richland, WA/Kamiakin) went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and reached base safely in all four of her plate appearances adding a pair of walks.
Junior starting pitcher Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) took the loss (2-5) allowing 7 hits and 5 runs in 3.1 innings. Freshman Anna Kasner (Milton, WA/Fife) came on in relief and allowed 2 runs (1 ER) in 2.2 innings.
Holy Names (4-27) was led by multi-hit games from right fielder Marissa Gasca (2-for-3, 3 R, 2B, BB), designated player Megan Porche (2-for-2, 3B, 2 RBI) and center fielder Jazmine Lewis (2-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI). Relief pitcher Dyemond Dye (2-9) recorded the win allowing 2 hits and 1 run in 3.0 innings and Cassidy Clavelle notched the save holding the Vikings to 3 hits and 2 runs over the final 3.0 innings.
Game Notes: Carlie Richards extended her hitting streak to a career-high 10 consecutive games with her pinch-hit 2-run single in the 6th inning...Richards is batting .444 (12-for-27) with 3 doubles and 6 RBI during the hitting streak.
