TURLOCK, Calif. - The Western Washington University softball team closed out play in the 2017 Tournament of Champions going 1-1 on Sunday, including a 4-0 victory over No. 7 Chico State and a 4-1 defeat by Cal State San Bernardino.
Freshman starting pitcher Anna Kasner (Milton, WA/Fife) fired a complete-game, 1-hit shutout against the 7th-ranked Wildcats, tying her career-high with 13 strikeouts. It marked the sixth time this season the right-hander has recorded double-digits in strikeouts in a game, and third time to reach the 13-strikeout mark.
The two-time NFCA National Player of the Week and Freshman of the Year candidate allowed only a two-out single in the first inning, and then retired the final 19 batters she faced. Of her 13 strikeouts, 12 were swinging.
In 16 appearances (14 starts), Kasner has recorded 123 strikeouts, 7th-most in WWU single-season history, and is averaging 10.17 strikeouts per 7.0 innings pitched.
Sophomore McKenna Mathis (Mesa, WA/Connell) led the Vikings at the plate going 3-for-6 in the two games combined, while junior Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade) was 2-for-6 with a pair of RBI and Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) was also 2-for-6.
WWU ended the 26-team, 77-game tournament going 4-2 with wins over Academy of Art (12-0), San Francisco State (3-1), UC San Diego (1-0) and Chico State (4-0). WWU is now 53-48 all-time in the 16 years of the Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State.

GAME 1 / CSU San Bernardino 4, WWU 1 Box Score |
Western opened the day with a 4-1 loss against Cal State San Bernardino.
The Vikings got on the board first in the top of the 3rd inning on a squeeze bunt by freshman Mackenzie Palmer (Federal Way WA/Todd Beamer). McKenna Mathis and Sarah Morrow (Enumclaw, WA) led off with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a groundout by Shearyna Labasan. Palmer then brought home the go-ahead run with a perfectly executed bunt.
The Coyotes pulled even in the bottom half of the 3rd on a sacrifice fly to right field by catcher Jessica Brown, and then took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 4th on three consecutive two-out, run-scoring hits. Designated player Brooks Thomas brought home the go-ahead run with a double to left field and was followed by another double by leadoff hitter Jessica Angulo.
WWU brought the tying run to the plate in its final at-bat, but stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to fall to 15-13 on the season.
Starting pitcher Labasan recorded the loss to fall to 6-3 on the season, allowing 8 hits and 4 runs (3 ER) in the complete-game effort.
CSUSB starter Amanda Ramirez scattered 5 hits and allowed 1 run to earn the complete-game victory to improve to 10-6 on the season.

Anna Kasner turned in a brilliant performance in the final game of the tournament, limiting one of the best teams in the nation to only one hit in the complete-game shutout. Kasner retired 21 of 22 batters faced in the game (one over the minimum), with only a two-out, first-inning single keeping her from a perfect game.
At one point Kasner struck out 6 consecutive batters (all swinging) from the 3rd through 5th innings, and has an extended stretch of 9 strikeouts over 11 batters faced from the 2nd through 6th innings.
Chico State entered the game with a team batting average of .327 and were a perfect 5-0 in the Tournament of Champions. Kasner's 13 strikeouts nearly doubled the Wildcats previous season high of 7 strikeouts in a game (Feb. 3 vs. Western Oregon).
Western took the early 1-0 lead with a single tally in the bottom of the first inning. Shearyna Labasan led off with a sharp single to left field, stole second base and scored on a one-out single by Makinlee Sellevold (Everett, WA/Cascade).
The Vikings capitalized on a pair of Chico State errors in the 4th inning to increase the lead to 4-0. Kasner helped her own cause with a line drive sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to put the Vikings up 2-0, and the Vikings would add two more insurance runs in the frame.
