April 22, 2017 ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Western Washington University men's and women's track & field teams competed Saturday at the 23rd Annual Spike Arlt Invitational hosted by Central Washington University at Tomlinson Stadium.
The Vikings captured four event victories during the competition, with sophomore Alex Barry (Sequim, WA) winning the javelin, freshman Waverly Shreffler (Sequim, WA) taking first in the 800m (2:20.68), freshman Aundrea Koger (Osage City, KS) winning the 1,500m (4:56.13) and senior Megan Mortensen (Tacoma, WA/Franklin Pierce) winning the discus.
Barry won the men's javelin competition with a mark of 60.69m/199-1, below his season-best mark of 62.30m/204-5 which is an NCAA II provisional qualifying mark.
Mortensen recorded a season-best mark of 43.77m/143-7 as she aims for a three-peat as the GNAC champion in the discus.
Junior Brandon Pless (Sedro Woolley, WA) recorded a pair of 2nd-place finishes in the shot put (15.47m/50-9.25) and discus (48.98m/160-8), and was 4th in the hammer throw (51.69m/169-7).
Sophomore Savannah Smith (Renton, WA) finished 3rd in the women's 200m race, clocking a personal-best of 25.40 for the 5th-fastest time in WWU outdoor history and amongst the top 10 in the GNAC this season.
Sophomore Emily Sytsma (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian) also placed 2nd in the 400m with a PR of 58.30 and senior Katie Tyburczy (Flagstaff, AZ) was 2nd in the 3,000m steeplechase. Sophomore Rachael Roberts (Woodinville, WA) was 2nd in the pole vault equaling her personal best of 3.50m/11-5.75 and freshman Jewels Oliquiano (Kaneohe, HI/Castle) was 3rd clearing 3.35m/10-11.75 just missing a mark inside the WWU top 10.
Sophomore Costel David (Vancouver, WA/Evergreen) placed 3rd in the men's javelin with a personal-best throw of 53.59m/175-10. Freshman Enrique Gomez (Seattle, WA/Franklin) was 2nd in the 800m in 1:57.40 and freshman Liam Cossette (Spokane, WA/Ferris) also placed 2nd in the 1,500m in 4:03.39.
WWU returns to action next Saturday hosting the 2017 Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet at Civic Stadium in Bellingham.
