Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Vikings Fall to No. 1 Simon Fraser 3-0

WWU returns home for four straight home games

BURNABY, BC – The Western Washington University men's soccer dropped a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game to No. 1 nationally-ranked Simon Fraser University 3-0 Sunday evening at Terry Fox Field.

The Vikings dropped to 6-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in GNAC play with the loss to the top-ranked Clan. SFU kept its perfect record intact improving to 13-0-0 overall and 7-0-0 in conference play.

Simon Fraser controlled the flow of the game from the beginning, and out-shot the Vikings 17-12 in the contest, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.

SFU struck first in at the 6:06 mark of the first half, when Connor Glennon collected a rebounded shot by Marcello Polisi and fired past WWU goalkeeper Brandon Wolter (Vancouver, WA/Union) into the top right of the goal.

Glennon struck again in the 36th minute driving home his second goal of the game and 15th of the season. SFU connected on a few passes inside the 18-yard box after the Vikings failed to clear the ball, and Glennon scored inside the 6-yard box with a hard shot to the left of WWU's diving goalkeeper.

GNAC leading scorer Matteo Polisi capped the 3-0 shutout with his 15th goal of the season in the 71st minute. Polisi, who also had an assist on the Clan's first goal, now has 41 points on the season (15 goals, 11 assists). His goal at the 70:29 mark came off a blocked shot that he struck from 10-yards out.

The Vikings best scoring opportunity of the game came in the 77th minute when sophomore midfielder Drew Farnsworth (Auckland, New Zealand) fired from outside the box that SFU goalkeeper Luciano Trasolini made a diving stop on, and the rebound shot by senior defender Louis Genty (Toulouse, France) sailed wide right.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Thomas Ewert (Vancouver, WA/Skyview) took over in goal in the second half and allowed one goal and made one save. Wolter had 3 stops and allowed a pair of goals in the first 45 minutes of the contest.

The Vikings (6-6-1, 2-4-1) return home to Harrington Field for four of the remaining five games of the 2018 season, beginning with GNAC contests vs. Saint Martin's (Thursday, 4 pm) and Seattle Pacific (Saturday, 7 pm).
