LAS VEGAS - The Western Washington University softball team dropped a pair of games in the second day of the Desert Stinger Tournament at Majestic Park.
WWU was defeated 9-2 by Sonoma State in the first game and were shut out 8-0 by nationally-ranked No. 21 Chico State in the nightcap.
Freshman Erica Hardy led the Vikings at the plate going 4-for-7 in the two games, including a 4-for-4 performance vs. Sonoma State. Freshman Rylie Wales (2-for-6, HR) and junior Shearyna Labasan (2-for-7) also recorded multiple hits during the day.
The young Vikings are now 0-4 on the season and complete the first tournament of the season Sunday playing Concordia-Irvine at 11:30 am.

The Vikings nearly equaled Sonoma State in the hits column with a season-high 10 hits, but WWU was defeated by Sonoma State 9-2 in the first game of the day.
Freshman second baseman Erica Hardy, who grew up in nearby Henderson, Nev., led WWU going 4-for-4 and freshman first baseman Rylie Wales hit her first collegiate home run.
Western got off to a quick start with a run in the 1st inning, but SSU answered with a pair of runs in its first at-bat and led the rest of the way. The game was a one-run affair until the Seawolves scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning, with leadoff hitter Alee Balanon providing the damage with a grand slam.
WWU freshman Kira Doan (0-1) made her first collegiate start in the circle, suffering the loss by allowing 7 runs and 6 hits in 3.0 innings.
SSU (3-1) was led by a 3-for-4 game from first baseman Karly Macadangdang and a pair of hits and 4 RBI from Balanon. The Seawolves were 8-for-8 stealing bases off the Vikings.

Chico State 8, WWU 0 Box Score | Game Book
WWU was limited to two hits in the 8-0 loss against No. 21 Chico State in the final game of the day.
The Wildcats (4-0) jumped out to the 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning off WWU starter Anna Kasner (0-2).
Chico State starter Sam Mulock (2-0) carried a no-hitter into the 5th inning before freshman left fielder Sierra Tibbetts tabbed a one-out double to center field. WWU's only other hit in the contest was a leadoff single by Rylie Wales in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Chico led 3-0 after five innings, but hit three home runs in the top of the sixth inning off Kasner to extend the lead to 7-0 to put the game out of reach. The top five hitters in the CSU lineup each recorded multi-hit games and combined to go 8-for-15.
WWU junior pitcher Morgan VanRiper made her third career pitching appearance, allowing only 2 hits and one unearned run in 1.2 innings of relief work.
