Game 1 - Box Score | Game 2 - Box Score

BURNABY, B.C. - The Western Washington University softball team splits its Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at Beedie Field, winning the first game 2-0 and falling 4-2 in the nightcap.

WWU is now 8-15 overall and 5-7 in league play. Simon Fraser improved to 11-4 overall and 8-4 in GNAC play.

Freshman catcher Erica Hardy (Henderson, NV/Coronado) and junior third baseman/pitcher Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) led the Vikings at the plate, each recording 3 hits on the day. Labasan recorded a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with 2 stolen bases in the first game and Hardy was 2-for-3 with a double in the nightcap.

Sophomore pitcher Anna Kasner (Milton, WA/Fife) led the Vikings to victory in the opening game, tossing a 4-hit shutout. Kasner became the 14th pitcher in program history to join the 20-win club and moved into a tie for 6th place with her eighth career shutout.

The Vikings continue on the road next week beginning a 9-game trip to California that includes six games in the annual Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State in Turlock, California. WWU opens the trip with a non-conference game Thursday vs. Sonoma State at Warrior Field on the Stanislaus State campus in Turlock with first pitch scheduled for 4 pm.

The Vikings scored a pair of runs in the top of the 4th inning, giving starting pitcher Anna Kasner all the runs she would need in the 2-0 victory to open the doubleheader.

Kasner recorded her 20th career victory, 24th career complete game and 8th shutout by allowing only 4 hits in her start. She struck out 4, issued one walk, and wiggled out of a pair of jams in the 2nd and 3rd inning in an otherwise dominating performance.

WWU broke the scoreless tie in the 4th inning when senior right fielder Carlie Richards (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin) tabbed a leadoff double off the center field fence. Sophomore center fielder Jackie Lucido (San Jose, CA/Piedmont Hills) drove in the tiebreaking run with a bunt single and the second run came home on a deep sacrifice fly by freshman left fielder Lauren Lo (Issaquah, WA/Skyline).

SFU loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a single, error and walk, but Kasner got out of the jam with three consecutive groundouts, including two outs recorded at home plate. The Clan again put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the 3rd with less than 2 outs, but Kasner got a flyout and strikeout to keep the game scoreless. After allowing a leadoff single in the 3rd inning, Kasner retired 15 of the last 18 batters she faced.

Shearyna Labasan led the Vikings at the plate going 2-for-4, her team-leading 10th multi-hit game of the season.

SFU starter Alia Stachoski (7-4) suffered the loss allowing 6 hits and 2 runs in a complete-game effort. She struck out 8 batters and issued 4 walks to have her personal 4-game winning streak snapped.

Game 2: SFU 4, WWU 2 Box Score | Game Book

WWU couldn't complete the doubleheader sweep, falling to the Clan 4-2 in the second game on Sunday.

SFU jumped out to the 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when shortstop Taylor Lundrigan recorded a two-out triple down the right field line that eluded a diving Carlie Richards and scored on the play when the throw to the infield went to second base.

The Clan extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the 4th inning and grew the lead even more to 4-0 after the 5th inning.

WWU plated a pair of runs in the top of the 6th inning to cut the deficit to 2 runs, with sophomore shortstop Paityn Cyr (Mount Vernon, WA) recording a run-scoring single and Richards drove home a run with a groundout. Relief pitcher Alia Stachoski got out of the jam striking out freshman second baseman Kira Doan (Brier, WA/Mountlake Terrace) on a called third strike.

WWU brought the possible tying run to the plate in the top of the 7th inning when freshman Lauren Lo tabbed a two-out single to left field, but Shearyna Labasan flied out to center field to end the game.

Labasan (4-7) recorded the loss allowing 7 hits and 4 runs in a complete-game effort.

Erica Hardy went 2-for-3 with her second double of the season and freshman third baseman Sam Silver (Mount Vernon, WA) went 1-for-3 with a double for her first collegiate hit.

SFU starting pitcher Jessica Tate earned the win to remain perfect at 3-0 on the season, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs in 5.1 innings. Stachoski allowed a pair of inherited runners to score, but prevented the WWU comeback by recording her fourth save of the season.

Lundrigan (2-for-3, 2 R, 3B, RBI) and first baseman Kate Fergusson (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI) each recorded multi-hit games for SFU.
