Vikings Earn Split During Final Day of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. - The Western Washington University softball team went 1-1 during the final day of the 17th Annual Tournament of Champions on Sunday and Pedretti Park, dropping a 4-0 game to Academy of Art and picking up a 1-0 win over Cal State East Bay.

WWU moves to 10-19 on the season and finished the Tournament of Champions with a 2-4 record.

After getting shut out vs. a tough Academy of Art (24-11) team in the opening game of the day, Western rebounded with the 1-0 victory over Cal State East Bay to close out the tournament.

Freshman starting pitcher Kira Doan (Brier, WA/Mountlake Terrace) recorded a 2-hit shutout vs. the Pioneers for her first collegiate victory, while classmate Lauren Lo (Issaquah, WA/Skyline) was the hitting hero with a run-scoring double in the top of the 7th inning that plated the game-winning run.

Sophomore shortstop Paityn Cyr (Mount Vernon, WA) led the Vikings with 6 hits in the 6-game tournament, batting .300 (6-for-20). Freshman third baseman Sam Silver (Mount Vernon, WA) was 5-for-16 (.313) with 4 RBI and junior pitcher/third baseman Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) batted .294 (5-for-17).

WWU's pitchers posted a 2.92 ERA during the tournament (16 ER, 38.1 IP) with Doan allowing only 1 run and 4 hits in 9.0 innings.

The Vikings (10-19) remain in the Central Valley to play a non-conference doubleheader against Stanislaus State on Tuesday starting at 3 pm at Warrior Softball Field. WWU will continue its extended spring break road trip and return to Great Northwest Athletic Conference a four-game series at Montana State Billings on Friday and Saturday.

The Vikings were held off the scoreboard in the first game of the day falling to Academy of Art 4-0.

Western came out swinging with 4 hits in the first 3 innings, but was held off the scoreboard going 1-for-6 with runner on base. AAU turned to their ace in the top of the 3rd inning with a pair of runners on base, with Brooke Larsen striking out shortstop Paityn Cyr to end the scoring threat.

Junior starting pitcher Shearyna Labasan was perfect through the first 3.0 innings, setting down the first 9 batters she faced, until running into trouble in the 4th inning. Center fielder Gabi Hirsch led off with a single to left-center field, and scored on a double to center field by Brenna Mitchell that was lost in the sun by WWU's Jackie Lucido (San Jose, CA/Piedmont Hills). Shortstop Samantha Klune followed with a double down the left field line to stake the Urban Knights to the 2-0 lead.

AAU added single tallies in the 5th and 6th inning to bring the game to the final score.

Labasan (4-10) took the loss allowing 7 hits and 4 runs in 6.0 innings. She struck out one and issued one walk, and also went 1-for-3 at the plate to extend her hitting streak to 3 consecutive games. Senior right fielder Carlie Richards (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin) was 2-for-3 to lead WWU at the plate.

Larsen earned the win in the circle to improve to 14-2 on the season, capping AAU's perfect 5-0 performance in the tournament. First baseman Brenna Youngquist went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Urban Knights as 6 different players recorded the 7 hits.

Game 2: WWU 1, CSUEB 0 Box Score | Game Book

Western Washington freshman pitcher Kira Doan fired a 2-hit shutout in her second career start to lead the Vikings to a 1-0 victory over Cal State East Bay in the final game of the tournament.

With the game scoreless heading to the final inning, WWU struck for the only run of the game. Sophomore center fielder Jackie Lucido drew a one-out walk and scored from first base on a double to the right field gap by freshman left fielder Lauren Lo.

Doan allowed one baserunner in the bottom of the 7th inning on a fielding error, but struck out CSUEB right fielder Belle Placencia for the final out of the game to preserve the 1-0 victory. Doan allowed just three baserunners in the game on 2 hits and one walk, but was otherwise stellar while recording her first collegiate victory.

WWU's 4 hits were spread across different players, with Lo's third double of the season driving home the game-winning run.

CSUEB starter Olivia McWhorter was saddled with the loss allowing one run on 4 hits in the complete-game effort.
