Game 2 Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. - The Western Washington University softball team split its non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Stanislaus State, dropping the first game 5-3 and came back with a 3-2 extra-inning victory in the nightcap at Warrior Softball Field.
WWU moves to 11-20 on the season and completed the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 6-13 record. Stanislaus State, coached by former WWU assistant and University of Washington player Jessica Ventoza, is 18-14 following the doubleheader split.
WWU was an inning away from notching the doubleheader sweep, as a 3-run 1st inning in the first game of the doubleheader proved to be too much for the Vikings to overcome in the 5-3 loss. Western had the potential go-ahead run come to the plate while recording 4 hits in the top of the 7th inning, but couldn't complete the comeback.
In the nightcap, sophomore pitcher Anna Kasner (Milton, WA/Fife) was holding Stanislaus scoreless through the first 6.0 innings and the Vikings took a 1-0 lead heading into the final inning. Stanislaus plated the game-tying run on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning. With the international tiebreaker in effect placing a runner on second base to start the 8th inning, the Vikings forged ahead on a 2-run double to left field by freshman first baseman Rylie Wales (Snohomish, WA). The Warriors immediately scored a run in the bottom of the 8th on a stolen base and throwing error, but Kasner struck out the last two batters she faced to strand the tying run on base. Kasner (6-8) earned the win allowing one earned run in the 8.0-inning complete game effort, striking out 12 batters without issuing a walk. It was her first appearance since leaving her start Saturday against San Francisco State after only pitching 1.0 inning and leaving with a minor injury.
The Vikings (11-20) continue their extended spring break road trip and return to Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a four-game series at Montana State Billings on Friday (starts at 1 pm MT) and Saturday (starts at noon MT).
A late 7th-inning rally by the Vikings came up just short in a 5-3 loss to open Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader.
Stanislaus State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the 1st inning, and added two important insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.
The Vikings 7th-inning rally was keyed by the first four batters in the inning reaching via hit leading to a pair of runs, but freshman Erica Hardy (Henderson, NV/Coronado) was thrown out trying to advance to third base for the first out of the inning. WWU sent the go-ahead run to the plate, but relief pitcher Megan Stacy recorded a pair of strikeouts to end the game for her first save of the season. WWU cut into the lead with a single tally in the top of the 3rd inning when freshman left fielder Lauren Lo (Issaquah, WA/Skyline) led off with a single and scored on a two-out infield single by junior pitcher Shearyna Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll). Western had another chance to draw closer putting a runner on 3rd base with less than 2 outs, but couldn't push home the run. Sophomore center fielder Jackie Lucido (San Jose, CA/Piedmont Hills) led off with a double to the left field gap, moved the 3rd on a sacrifice bunt, but was stranded when Stanislaus pitcher Anyssa Garvin sandwiched a pair of infield popups around a walk to end the scoring threat. Labasan (4-11) suffered the loss allowing 13 hits and 5 runs in 6.0 innings. She struck out 5 and issued one walk.
Lo and Lucido both went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Vikings at the plate.
Garvin (2-1) recorded the victory for Stanislaus State, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits in 6.0+ innings. Megan Stacy halted WWU's 7th-inning rally to record her first save of the season.
Left fielder/third baseman Aliyah Garvin went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and designated player Alanah Laupua-Vanisi was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Warriors at the plate. The top three hitters in the Stanislaus lineup each recorded multi-hit games.

The Vikings scored a pair of runs in the top of the 8th inning to earn the 3-2 victory in the nightcap, earning the doubleheader split against the Warriors.
Sophomore Anna Kasner held the Warriors scoreless through the first 6.0 innings of the game, and WWU held a 1-0 lead after scoring a run in the top of the 6th inning on a 2-out single by freshman shortstop Sam Silver (Mount Vernon, WA). Stanislaus knotted the game with one out in its final at-bat when catcher Ruby Quiralte singled, and then pinch-runner Karmyn Rivera stole second and third base, and then scored on a wild pitch.
WWU took the lead in the top of the 8th inning with the international tie breaker in effect. Freshman second baseman Kira Doan (Brier, WA/Mountlake Terrace) was placed at second base, and moved to third base on a sacrifice fielder's choice by Shearyna Labasan. Wales then cleared the bases with a double to left field to give the Vikings the 3-1 lead. Stanislaus State immediately scored a run in the bottom half of the 8th inning when Kaitlyn Doyle was placed at second base via the international tiebreaker rules, stole third base and scored on a throwing error by freshman catcher Erica Hardy. With the potential tying run on base, Kasner recorded a pair of strikeouts to end the game and pick up her sixth win of the season. Kasner (6-8) finished with a season-high 12 strikeouts and did not issue a walk. It marked her third double-digit strikeout performance of the season and 10th of her career. The 12 strikeouts are one off her career-high of 13, and moved her into 5th in the WWU career record book with 285 strikeouts (8.74 Strikeouts Per 7.0 Innings).
Silver went 2-for-4 with an RBI to raise her season batting average to an even .300 (9-for-30).
Leadoff hitter Alexus Martinez (2-for-4, SB) and Quiralte (2-for-3) both recorded multi-hit games for Stanislaus. Starting pitcher Karina Collazo recorded a no-decision allowing 5 hits and one unearned run in 7.0 innings. Relief pitcher Kristin Borst (3-3) suffered the loss allowing both runs in the top of the 8th inning.
