April 21, 2018 Beach Invitational Results
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Maddie Taylor recorded a provisional-qualifying mark in the high jump to highlight the final day of competition at the Long Beach State Beach Invitational on Saturday, hosted at Jack Rose Track, as the Western Washington University track & field program concluded a stretch of four consecutive competition days in California.
Saturday was the second of two days for WWU at the Beach Invitational, after also competing at the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational Wednesday through Friday.
Taylor (Seattle, WA/Auburn Mountainview/Montana) cleared 1.70m (5-7) on her first attempt at the height to finish 9th of 52 placers and better the provisional standard of 1.67m. She had entered the week with a personal-best jump of 1.66m (5-5 ¼), which had led the GNAC and ranked 9th on the program top-10 list. Her effort on Saturday is 5th on the WWU top-10 list, tied for 10th on the GNAC top-10 list and among the top 20 nationally during the current season.
In the track events for the WWU women, sophomore Hannah Bradley (Bellingham, WA) was 55th of 87 in the 100m with a personal-best time of 12.39, improving upon a previous personal-best time of 12.47 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday.
Junior Savannah Smith (Renton, WA) placed 39th of 90 in the 400m, crossing the line in 57.53. Her personal-best of 57.12 (No. 7 on WWU top-10) came Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Most of the WWU pole vaulters competed Friday, though senior Anna Paradee (Tacoma, WA/Decatur) was in action Saturday and tied for 20th at a height of 3.90m (12-9 ½). She attempted three times at a would-be conference and school record height of 4.05m. Though her effort Saturday was above the provisional standard, it was short of her season-best height (3.97m, 13-0 ¼) set in Bellingham earlier in the month and ranking tied for 5th nationally as of Saturday.
In other field event competition, sophomore Chanelle Eddy (Bellingham, WA/Sehome/Whitworth) finished 60th (41.75m/137-0) of 86 in the discus.
Sophomore Cordell Cummings (Arlington, WA), who ran a personal-best time of 15.12 in the 110m hurdles at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday, recorded a personal best for the second consecutive day in the event by placing 29th of 54 in a time of 15.01. The time is the top time in the GNAC as of Saturday. Sophomore Nick Makrakis (Concord, CA/Northgate) finished with a time of 17.47 (52nd).
Cummings also competed in the 400m hurdles, placing 29th of 48 with a time of 54.28. His personal-best time of 54.13 came Friday, ranking 2nd in the GNAC.
Freshman Bryant Welch (Burien, WA/Mount Rainier) placed 47th of 92 in the 400m, finishing in a time of 49.90. Welch ran a time of 49.09 on Friday, a personal-best time ranking 6th in the conference this season. Also in the 400m, Makrakis posted a personal-best time, finishing 88th in 56.03.
Junior Kyler Sager (Snohomish, WA/Everett CC) placed 39th of 97 in the 1,500m, crossing the line in 3:57.96, just shy of his personal-best time of 3:57.60 coming last week at Saint Martin's.
A day after clearing a personal-best 2.06m (6-9) in the high jump for a provisional-qualifying and conference-leading mark ranking tied for 5th in program history, junior Tupre Wickliff (Vancouver, WA/Evergreen/Clark College) cleared 2.00m (6-6 ¾) to tie for 18th among 43 placers on Saturday while freshman Garrett Davies (Vancouver, WA/Mountain View) finished tied for 41st at 1.85m (6-0 ¾).
Freshman Bryce Bryant-Leat (Spokane, WA/Lewis and Clark) led WWU in the discus with a personal-best throw of 45.42m (149-0), finishing 68th of 88. Senior Brandon Pless (Sedro-Woolley, WA) followed in 73rd with a mark of 43.81m (143-9).
Former WWU All-American Alex Donigian placed 3rd in the 100m (10.50) on Saturday competing for SoCal Track Club.
The Vikings return home next weekend for the second of two home meets during the season. WWU hosts the 37th Annual Ralph Vernacchia Meet on Saturday (April 28) at Civic Stadium in Bellingham. Visit WWUVikings.com for meet information.
