SEATTLE, Wash. – Led by a personal best and the 7th-fasted time in WWU history in the 400m by sophomoreMyles Smith, the Western Washington University track & field team wrapped up competition at the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor.
WWU had a total of five new entries into the program's indoor record book, including four during the first day of competition on Friday.
The Vikings are off next week, returning to action Feb. 8-9 at the UW Classic at Dempsey Indoor. The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships will be held Feb. 15-16 in Nampa, Idaho.
Sophomore Myles Smith (Puyallup, WA) finished 14th out of 37 competitors in the 400m, setting a PR with a 49.88. Besting his previous best set earlier this season, Smith moved up to 7th in the WWU indoor record book.
The Viking men placed 6th out of 9 entries in the 4x400 relay finishing in 3:23.32, just missing a program top 10 mark. The WWU foursome included sophomore Jon Oglesby (Athens, GA/Cedar Shoals), freshman Koby Okezie (Tacoma, WA/Todd Beamer), senior Reid Lovercamp (Wenatchee, WA) and freshman Mark Daniels (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale).
Freshman Ian Rinefort (Ashland, OR) moved up four spots to finish 16th in the heptathlon, highlighted by a 4th-place finish in the 1,000m (2:39.05) and 11th-place finish in the pole vault (4.10m/13-5.25). Seren Dances was in 4th place after the first day of competition, but did not compete on Saturday.

The Dempsey indoor facility is a 307-meter Mondo track with a six lane straightaway, and a five-lane oval. For the field the Dempsey has two 160 ft. elevated wooden long jump runways (132 ft. TJ) with Mondo overlay; two 150 ft. elevated wooden pole vault runways with Mondo overlay; two 80 ft. right/left wooden high jump approach areas with Mondo overlay; two reinforced wooden throwing rings.
NCAA II PROVISIONAL AND AUTOMATIC MARKS
The list of NCAA automatic and provisional qualifying marks can be found online on the NCAA II Indoor Track & Field website. Athletes that obtain the automatic marks qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships that will be held March 8-9 in Pittsburg, Kansas, hosted by Pittsburg State University at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
The Vikings will next be in action Feb. 8-9 at the Husky Classic. The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships follows Feb. 15-16 at the Jacksons Indoor Complex in Nampa, Idaho and the SPU Final Qualifier will be held Feb. 23 at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle. The NCAA Division II Championships will be held March 8-9 at the Robert W. Plaster Center on the Pittsburg State University campus in Pittsburg, Kansas.
