WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – Western Washington University sophomore Aidan Thain is tied for 5th and the Vikings as a team are tied for 6th in the 16-team field following the first round of the 2019 Dennis Rose Intercollegiate played Monday at Waikoloa Kings' Course.

 

The Vikings fired an opening round score of 13-over-par 301 on the par 72, 7,074 layout on Monday. Sonoma State University holds the first round lead after firing a 1-over-par 289 on Monday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament continues Tuesday with the second round.

 

Thain, a redshirt sophomore out of Bellevue's Sammamish High School, carded an even-par 72 for his sixth round of par or better this season. Thain carded four birdies in his opening round, including three on his first five holes.

 

Sophomore Jordan Lee is right behind Thain in a tie for 13th place following his 2-over-par round of 74, with senior Ethan Casto tied for 24th one shot back of Lee with an opening-round 75 (+3).

 

Tuesday's second round begins with a 7 am shotgun start and can be followed online via theGolfstat.com Live Leaderboard.

Here is a look at the first round results from Monday's competition at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Hawai'i Hilo. The tournament is being played on the par 72 Waikoloa King's Course. Tuesday's second round is scheduled to start teeing off with a 7 am shotgun start.

ABOUT WWU MEN'S GOLF

The WWU men's golf team has an incredible streak of advancing to the NCAA Championships in each of the 21 seasons the program has competed at the NCAA Division II level dating back to the 1998-99 season, including a 3rd-place finish at the 2013 national championship. The program has produced 17 All-Americans and has won 9 of 12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships since the tournament debuted in 2008, including the 2019 title. The Vikings have also featured the GNAC Championships individual medalist in 8 of 12 tournaments, including 2018 champion Ethan Casto and 2019 champion Brody Bonfilio.
