Freshman Elise Sumner leads the Vikings in a tie for 4th place in the 55-player field

WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – Led by a career-low round from freshman Elise Sumner the Western Washington University women's golf team is tied for first place after the first round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on the Waikoloa Beach Course.

 

WWU concluded Monday's first round at 23-over-par 303 to tie for the tournament lead in the 10-team field. The Vikings are playing in the three-day, 54-hole tournament which differs from the usual two-day, 36-hole format. 

 

The Vikings are tied with Biola at the top of the leaderboard, with Sonoma State and Concordia (OR) one stroke back in third place. Tuesday's second round is scheduled to begin with a 7 am shotgun start. 

 

Sumner, a true freshman from North Tustin, California, fired a career-low round of 73 on the par 70 course with 13 pars and one birdie. She is part of a three-way tie for 4th place, with Kaelyn Uchida of tournament host Hawai'i Hilo holding the first-round lead with an even-par 70.

 

Senior Brianna Esvelt is tied for 13th place with a 6-over-par 76, and freshman Claire Moon and senior Lacy Overstreet are tied for 19th at 7-over-par 77.

ABOUT WWU WOMEN'S GOLF

The WWU women's golf team recently completed its 26th season as an intercollegiate sport in 2018-19 with a third-place finish at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. The Vikings won the first five GNAC Championships beginning with the inaugural event in 2011, and have placed in the top three during all nine conference tournaments. WWU has made 10 appearances in the NCAA II West Regional Championships, last in 2016, and six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in seven of the nine years it has been awarded, including 2018-19 conference co-Player of the Year Lacy Sheldon. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has produced nine All-Americans.
