WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The Western Washington University men's golf team showed an eight-shot improvement, retaining a hold of 6th place after the first two rounds of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Waikoloa Kings' Course.
WWU recorded a team round of 5-over-par 293 and is at 18-over-par 594 through the first 36 holes of the 54-hole, three-round tournament. The Vikings are two strikes back of 5th-place UC San Diego and within striking distance of 3rd-place teams Concordia (OR) and Stanislaus State (+12). Sonoma State continues to lead the 16-team tournament at +1 (577).
WWU redshirt sophomore Aidan Thain continued his solid tournament performance with a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday, backing up his even-par round on Monday. Thain is tied for 3rd-place in the 87-player field at 1-under-par 143. Cal State Monterey Bay's Elis Svard holds a four-stroke lead heading into the final round at 7-under-par 137.
Senior Ethan Casto is tied for 27th place after a second consecutive round of 3-over-par 75. JuniorBrody Bonfilio turned in one of the lowest rounds of the day with a 4-under-par 68, and is tied with Casto at 6-over-par 150 for the tournament.
Wednesday's final round begins with a 7:30 am shotgun start and can be followed online via theGolfstat.com Live Leaderboard.

The WWU men's golf team has an incredible streak of advancing to the NCAA Championships in each of the 21 seasons the program has competed at the NCAA Division II level dating back to the 1998-99 season, including a 3rd-place finish at the 2013 national championship. The program has produced 17 All-Americans and has won 9 of 12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships since the tournament debuted in 2008, including the 2019 title. The Vikings have also featured the GNAC Championships individual medalist in 8 of 12 tournaments, including 2018 champion Ethan Casto and 2019 champion Brody Bonfilio.
