WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The Western Washington University women's golf team is in 3rd place after the first two rounds of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on the Waikoloa Beach Course.

 

The Vikings concluded Tuesday's second round with a 21-over-par 301, a two-stroke improvement from Monday's first round. WWU is comfortably in 3rd place in the 10-team tournament at 44-over-par 604, now chasing 2nd-place Sonoma State (+41, 601) and tournament leader Concordia (+35, 595).

 

Senior Lacy Overstreet carded the low round of the day for the Vikings with a 4-over-par 74 and is tied for 9th place in the 55-player field at 11-over-par 151.

 

Freshman Elise Sumner continued her solid tournament with a 6-over-par 76 and is in 7th place at 9-over-par 149. Freshman teammate Claire Moon is just outside of the top 10 tied for 13th at 12-over-par 152.

 

Junior Megan Billeter rebounded from a first-round 86 to turn in a 6-over-par 76 in the second round.

 

The final round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate is scheduled to start with a 7 am shotgun start, marking the final 18 holes for the Vikings during the fall portion of the 2019-20 schedule.

ABOUT WWU WOMEN'S GOLF

The WWU women's golf team recently completed its 26th season as an intercollegiate sport in 2018-19 with a third-place finish at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. The Vikings won the first five GNAC Championships beginning with the inaugural event in 2011, and have placed in the top three during all nine conference tournaments. WWU has made 10 appearances in the NCAA II West Regional Championships, last in 2016, and six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in seven of the nine years it has been awarded, including 2018-19 conference co-Player of the Year Lacy Sheldon. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has produced nine All-Americans.
