WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The Western Washington University women's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of the 2019-20 schedule with its best round of the season, capping a 3rd-place finish at the 2019 Dennis Rose Intercollegiate at the Waikoloa Beach Course on The Big Island in Hawai'i.
The Vikings turned in a third-round team score of 17-over-par 297 on Wednesday to place 3rd in the 10-team field. Concordia won the tournament at 46-over-par 886, recording a four-stroke victory over second-place Sonoma State (+50, 890).
"I'm pleased with the performance from the team this fall," said WWU head coach Luke Bennett. "There were many solid finishes and I know we haven't played our best golf yet. I'm excited for a productive winter and looking forward to seeing this team in completion in the spring."
Freshman Elise Sumner recorded a top-10 finish placing 6th at 12-over-par 222, carding a 3-over-par 73 in the third round. Sumner finished the tournament with 33 pars and 5 birdies.
"Elise has been rock solid for us this fall," said Bennett. "It was great to see her finish the fall so well."
Senior Lacy Overstreet tied for 12th at 16-over-par 226 and freshman Claire Moon was 15th at 17-over-par 227.
"Great to see all five of the team members contribute to this great finish to the fall season," added Bennett. "Everyone played well down the stretch and it was great to see solid play out of the freshmen."
Junior Megan Billeter shook off an opening-round 86, bouncing back with rounds of 76 (+6) and 74 (+4) over the final two rounds to finish in a tie for 29th place at 26-over-par 236. Senior Brianna Esvelt was right behind Billeter in 32nd place at 27-over-par 237.
Concordia's Cammie Decker and Cal State Monterey Bay's Isabel Carpenter tied for individual medalist honors at 4-over-par 214.
WWU completed its four-tournament fall schedule with a pair of runner-up placements, the 3rd-place finish in Hawai'i and a 10th-place finish in the 17-team West Regional Preview.
The spring schedule picks back up March 2-3, 2020 at the Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay at the Corica Park South Course in Alameda, California.

The WWU women's golf team recently completed its 26th season as an intercollegiate sport in 2018-19 with a third-place finish at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. The Vikings won the first five GNAC Championships beginning with the inaugural event in 2011, and have placed in the top three during all nine conference tournaments. WWU has made 10 appearances in the NCAA II West Regional Championships, last in 2016, and six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in seven of the nine years it has been awarded, including 2018-19 conference co-Player of the Year Lacy Sheldon. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has produced nine All-Americans.
