Senior Ethan Casto paces Vikings with third consecutive top-10 finish tying for 8th place

PORTLAND, Ore. – Led by four players in the top-10, the No. 23 Western Washington University men's golf team finished in 3rd place out of 14 teams at the Concordia Invitational played Monday and Tuesday at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. 

 

The Vikings were unable to move up the leaderboard in Tuesday's final round, finishing the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 9-over-par 861. WWU shot a 6-over-par 290 in the final round to finish three strokes back of tournament co-winners Simon Fraser and Colorado-Colorado Springs. SFU claimed the top spot via a tournament tiebreaker.

 

Senior captain Ethan Casto (Snohomish, WA) led the Vikings with his third top-10 finish in three tournaments this season, tying for 8th place at 1-over-par 214. Casto fired a final-round 1-under-par 70, his eighth under par round out of nine to start the season. 

 

Sophomore Aidan Thain (Bellevue, WA/Sammamish/Colorado Mesa) tied for 14th place at 3-over-par 216 and junior Jordan Lee (Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) and freshman Drew Halili (Port Orchard, WA/South Kitsap) were also inside the top-20 in the 77-player field tying for 18th place at 4-over-par 217. Redshirt freshman Cody Oakes (Arlington, WA) rounded out the Vikings contingent with consistent rounds of 72-75-73 to finish at 7-over-par 220.

 

Julius Kreutzer of Academy of Art won individual medalist honors finishing the tournament at 5-under-par 208 for a two-stroke victory over Maxwell Turnquist of Saint Martin's (-3, 210).

 

The Vikings return to action October 21-22 with their fourth of five fall tournaments competing in the Otter Invitational hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, California.

ABOUT WWU MEN'S GOLF

The WWU men's golf team has an incredible streak of advancing to the NCAA Championships in each of the 21 seasons the program has competed at the NCAA Division II level dating back to the 1998-99 season, including a 3rd-place finish at the 2013 national championship. The program has produced 17 All-Americans and has won 9 of 12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships since the tournament debuted in 2008, including the 2019 title. The Vikings have also featured the GNAC Championships individual medalist in 8 of 12 tournaments, including 2018 champion Ethan Casto and 2019 champion Brody Bonfilio.
