Vikings Finish 2nd at Concordia Invite

WWU has placed 2nd in each of their two tournaments in 2019-20

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Western Washington University women's golf team finished in 2nd place at the Concordia Invitational with play concluded Tuesday at Riverside Golf & Country Club.

 

The Vikings entered the final round tied for 1st with Simon Fraser after a first-round 12-over-par 300, but couldn't keep pace with the Clan finishing in 2nd place 10 strokes back. WWU shot 29-over-par in Tuesday's final round to finish at 41-over-par 617 for the tournament. SFU turned in a team score of 19-over-par 307 to win its second tournament of the season.

 

In two events to open the 2019-20 season, the Vikings have a pair of 2nd-place finishes also claiming runner-up honors at the True North Classic hosted by SFU to open the season.

 

"We didn't have the round we were hoping for today, but I think we learned a lot," said WWU assistant coach Katja Parrish. "We have a tough and talented team, and I know they will continue to improve as the season goes on."

 

Senior Lacy Overstreet (Dallas, TX/Legacy Christian/Montevallo) paced the Vikings tying for 4th place in the 54-player field at 7-over-par 151. Junior Megan Billeter (Spokane, WA/Mt. Spokane) earned her second top-10 finish of the season tying for 6th place at 8-over-par 152.

 

A pair of true freshman finished 19th and 24th, with Elise Sumner (North Tustin, CA/Foothill) turning in a 14-over-par 158 and Sophia Schmidt (Bellingham, WA) a 17-over-par 161.

 

Cammie Decker of tournament host Concordia won individual medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 5-over-par 149, winning a two-hole playoff over Claire Shubin of Dominican (CA).

ABOUT WWU WOMEN'S GOLF

The WWU women's golf team recently completed its 26th season as an intercollegiate sport in 2018-19 with a third-place finish at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. The Vikings won the first five GNAC Championships beginning with the inaugural event in 2011, and have placed in the top three during all nine conference tournaments. WWU has made 10 appearances in the NCAA II West Regional Championships, last in 2016, and six trips to the NCAA II National Championships. A Viking has been named the GNAC Player of the Year in seven of the nine years it has been awarded, including 2018-19 conference co-Player of the Year Lacy Sheldon. WWU has also produced the only two players in GNAC history to earn four First Team All-GNAC awards (Jenn Paul and Kristen Hansen) and has produced nine All-Americans.
