CHENEY, Wash. – The Western Washington University Track & Field team opened the 2019-20 indoor season competing in the Candy Cane XII hosted by Eastern Washington University at Thorpe Fieldhouse.
WWU had six student-athletes competing in the two-day season-opening meet that was held Friday and Saturday, with three multi athletes, a pair of high jumpers and one thrower.
Sophomore
Aliyah Dawkins shined in her season debut placing 5
th in the pentathlon with 3073 points, the 3
rd-best mark in WWU indoor history. Her best performance came placing 2
nd in the long jump with a top leap of 5.54m/18-2.25 for the 5
th-best mark in program history. Sophomore
Leanne Kibbee finished 9
th in the pentathlon with 2,525 points.
Senior
Tupre Wickliff won the men's high jump competition clearing 2.00m/6-6.75 on his final attempt at that height. Looking to break his indoor PR of 2.03m/6-8 set last year, Wickliff was unable to clear 2.05m, but is off to a great start in his collegiate finale.
Junior
Heather Faretta won the women's high jump clearing 1.60m/5-3, just short of her PR set last season at 1.64m/5-4.5.
Redshirt freshman
Raine Westfall placed 11
th in the weight throw with a top mark of 13.36m/43-10, good for 5
th-best mark in program history.
Sophomore
Cooper Cummings finished 7
th in the heptathlon with 4,149 points. His top performance out of the seven events was a 4
th-place finish in the long jump (6.25m/20-6.25) and 3
rd in the 1,000m (2:56.56).
The Vikings will have their true season opener for the 2020 indoor season January 18 at the UW Preview at the Dempsey Indoor in Seattle.
