VANCOUVER, BC – The Western Washington University Track & Field team was well-represented in the final standings of the final multi-event standings at the UBC Open completed on Sunday at the Rashpal Dhillon Track and Field Oval.
Freshman
Ian Rinefort won the decathlon with a strong second day performance, recording 6,303 points to record an NCAA II provisional qualifying mark. His point total entered the WWU outdoor record book as 5
th-best in program history and is currently 16
th-best in the nation. Rinefort overcame teammate
Seren Dances on the final day with wins in the 400m (50.95), pole vault (4.20m/13-9.25), javelin (43.57m/142-11) and the 1500m (4:29.65).
Dances finished with 6,029 points for 2
nd place and freshman
Cooper Cummings was 3
rd with 5,487 points. Junior
Nick Makrakis and freshman
Iyan Manju also had strong showings in the decathlon, but did not finish the competition.
Freshman
Aliyah Dawkins won the heptathlon with 3,686 points, well ahead of 2
nd-place finisher Heather Betz of UBC. Dawkins recorded event wins in the 100m hurdles (15.93), high jump (1.60m/5-3) and javelin (20.77m/68-1). Freshman
Leanne Kibbee was 4
th with 3,067 points, including a win in the shot put (8.25m/27-0.75.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE VIKS
The Vikings host the first of two home meets this upcoming Friday with the WWU Team Invitational at Civic Stadium in Bellingham. WWU will host Seattle Pacific, Saint Martin's and the University of British Columbia in the track meet that is scheduled to start with the field events at 2 pm. WWU will also host the annual Ralph Vernacchia Track & Field Meet on April 27 at Civic Stadium.
