Kim helped lead Kamiak High School to the 2019 WIAA 4A state title with a top 10 finish

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University head golf coach Luke Bennett has announced the addition of Devin Kim out of Kamiak High School to the 2019-20 recruiting class.

Kim helped lead Kamiak High School to the 2019 WIAA State 4A Championship while tying for 10thindividually at 5-over-par 149 (73-76). Kim also tied for 18th at the state tournament as a junior (+8, 152) and tied for 5th as a sophomore in 2017 (+5, 145).

 

"Devin is a solid addition to our program and we are excited for him to join the Viking golf family," said WWU head coach Luke Bennett. "He works extremely hard on his game and has shown great improvement over the last year. I look for him to be very competitive from the start."

 

Kim has also been a standout on the summer circuit finishing 26th at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Junior at Centennial (72-74-73) and advanced to the third round of match play at the 2016 PNGA Junior Boys Amateur Championship. He also tied for 2nd at the 2019 WJGA Players Open just prior to the 4A State Tournament earlier this spring.

 

Kim is the third piece of the recruiting class that Bennett has added to the program for the 2019-20 season, joining Nick Lasko (Clackamas, OR) and Drew Halili (Port Orchard, WA). 

 

WWU is coming off another successful season in 2018-19 with the team recording six tournament wins, including the ninth Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship in program history. WWU ended the regular season ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Division II Coaches Poll and advanced to the NCAA II Championships for the 21st consecutive season.

 

The 2019-20 squad returns three of the top six golfers that saw action last season, including Freshman All-American and GNAC Player of the Year Jordan Lee (will be a sophomore), 2019 GNAC individual champion Brody Bonfilio (will be a junior) and 2018 GNAC individual champion Ethan Casto (will be a senior).

 

ABOUT WWU MEN'S GOLF

The WWU men's golf team has an incredible streak of advancing to the NCAA Championships in each of the 21 seasons the program has competed at the NCAA Division II level dating back to the 1998-99 season, including a 3rd-place finish at the 2013 national championship. The program has produced 17 All-Americans and has won 9 of 12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships since the tournament debuted in 2008, including the 2019 title. The Vikings have also featured the GNAC Championships individual medalist in 8 of 12 tournaments, including 2018 champion Ethan Casto and 2019 champion Brody Bonfilio.
