Dances Finishes 5th in Heptathlon in Idaho

Dances puts up strong first-day total, but slips to finish in 5th place with 4,694 points

NAMPA, Idaho – Western Washington University multi-event student-athlete Seren Dances finished in 5th place out of 11 competitors in the heptathlon at the Ed Jacoby Invitational held on Friday and Saturday at Jacksons Indoor Track.
 
Dances, who is a sophomore in indoor eligibility and junior for the upcoming outdoor season, finished the two-day competition with 4,694 points to finish in 5th place.
 
The Port Townsend, Wash., native had a strong first day, completing the first four events with 2,857 points to rank 2nd behind 2016 Olympian and Jacoby Invite champion Jeremy Taiwo. Dances' first-day highlights included winning the long jump with a mark of 6.90m/22-7.75 and placing 2nd in the 60m (7.18) and high jump (1.91m/6-3.25). He also recorded an indoor personal best while placing 6th in the shot put (10.66m/34-11.75).
 
Dances had a solid start to the final day of competition placing 3rd in the 60m Hurdles with a time of 8.55 to earn 848 points. But he placed 8th in the pole vault clearing 3.61m/11-10 and was 11th in the 1000m finishing in 3:20.42.
 
His final point total of 4,694 fell short of his personal best of 4,771 points set at the 2018 Candy Cane XI in Cheney, Wash., and was just below the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark of 4,760 points. Taiwo won the competition with 5,787 points, followed by Westmont's Pieter Top (4,968 points).
 
Dances and the remainder of the WWU Track & Field team will continue the indoor season next weekend with the two-day UW Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle.  The 2020 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held Feb. 21-22 at Jackson Indoor Track in Nampa.
