IRVINE, Calif. – The breaks just haven't gone the way of the Western Washington University softball team so far in the 2020 season, with the Vikings dropping another close contest on Saturday evening 4-2 to Stanislaus State at the Concordia Kickoff Classic.
The Vikings are now 0-4 on the season and will close out the season-opening tournament on Sunday playing Cal State East Bay at 10:30 am. Stanislaus State recorded its first win of the young season improving to 1-3.
WWU got off to a quick start plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st inning on a two-run triple by junior first baseman Dakota Brooks.
The Warriors chipped away at the deficit scoring runs in the 4th and 5th innings to tie the game 2-2, and went ahead 4-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the 6th inning.
Junior starting pitcher Kira Doan (0-1) was saddled with the loss allowing 4 hits and 4 runs (3 ER) in the complete-game effort. Doan walked 7 batters and struck out 5 batters.
Stanislaus State third baseman Riquel Riveira went 2-for-2 with a walk and 2 runs scored to lead the Warriors at the plate. Relief pitcher Kyndra Marzorini allowed one hit in 3.0 scoreless innings to earn the win improving to 1-1 on the season.

ROAD TRIP CONTINUES TO UTAH
WWU will remain on the road following the Concordia Kickoff Classic, driving to St. George, Utah to play in the Dixie State Courtyard Classic. The Vikings will play five games in the three-day tournament that starts on Thursday, February 6 at Canyons Softball Complex.

The WWU softball program enters the 28th season in program history, with the Vikings posting a winning record in 17 seasons. WWU won the 1998 NAIA National Championship to record the school's first ever team national title and has made four trips to the NCAA Division II Regional Championships, last in 2017. Over the last six seasons (since 2014), the Vikings are 162-122 (.555) and won the 2017 GNAC Tournament to advance to the NCAA II West Regional in Monterey, California. Head coach Sheryl Gilmore is in her second season at the helm of the program in 2019, leading WWU to 27 wins, tied for the 10th-most in program history, in her first campaign in 2019.
