Vikings Off To Slow Start in California

WWU is 11th out of 12 teams at the Coyote Classic hosted by Cal State San Bernardino

2/17/2020 6:49:00 PM

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team opened the spring season with the first and second rounds of the Coyote Classic played Monday at Canyon Crest Country Club.

The Vikings showed signs of a long winter layoff, finishing the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament in 11th place in the 12-team field at 39-over-par 607. Stanislaus State paces the field in first place heading into the final round with a team score of 9-over-par 577.

"We showed a lot more rust than I expected after the winter break," said WWU head coach Luke Bennett. "We had a hard time adjusting to the green speed which was too bad because they are in great shape. We'll go into tomorrow with nothing to lose."

WWU is led by senior Ethan Casto, who is in a tie for 18th place in the 72-player field at 6-over-par 148. After opening the day with a 9-over-par 80 on the par 71 layout, Casto fired a 3-under-par 68 in the second round to tie for the lowest round of the day.

"It was good to see Ethan bounce back to his normal self in the afternoon round," added Bennett on his senior. "He finished great after making a double on his first hole in the afternoon, playing the final 17 holes at 5-under-par."

Junior Brody Bonfilio and sophomore Jordan Lee are tied for 27th place with matching scores of 7-over-par 149 through the first two rounds. Bonfilio shot rounds of 76 (+5) and 73 (+2) while leading the field with 26 pars, with Lee turning in consistent rounds of 75 (+4) and 74 (+3).

Justin Vrzich of Cal State San Marcos leads the race for tournament individual medalist honors at 3-under-par 139, a four-stroke lead over Scott Kerr (Simon Fraser) and Ryan Parry (Cal State Monterey Bay) at 1-over-par 143.

The final round begins with a shotgun start at 8 am, with the Vikings teeing off holes 11-13. WWU will be paired with the University of Redlands and Marymount College (CA).
