PORTLAND, Ore. – The Western Washington University Track & Field program was in action during the final day of the Bruin/Pilot Indoor on Sunday at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus.
WWU's distance running contingent led the way with several top 10 performances in program history. A total of 12 program top-10 marks were achieved during the two-day meet in Oregon, with six Sunday in Portland and six during Saturday's first day of competition on the George Fox University campus in Newberg.
Junior
Ed Kiolbasa had the top performance of the day placing 2
nd in the 3,000m, recording the 4
th-best time in indoor program history. He was the top collegiate finisher in the field of 58 competitors.
Sophomore
Annika Taylor placed 3
rd out of 22 runners in the 800m in 2:18.93, the 5
th-fastest time in program history.
Junior
Tovah Swartz-Ireland and senior
Sophia Galvez both placed in the top 10 out of 50 runners in the women's 3,000m. Swartz-Ireland placed 6
th with a time of 10:12.05, the 8
th-fastest time in program history. Galvez improved her PR to move up from No. 10 to No. 8 in program history in 10:13.74.
A pair of Vikings earned program top-10 marks in the women's mile, with junior
Jane Barr placing 4
thout of 32 runners in 5:08.11. Barr moved up one spot to No. 8 in program history with her personal-best time. Sophomore
Rebecca Lehman cracked the top-10 finishing 6
th in a time of 5:10.17.
While not earning program top-10 marks, freshman
Drew Weber placed 2
nd in the 800m in 1:55.90 (out of 29 runners) and sophomore
Ryan Witters was 2
nd in the 200m in 24:51.
The Vikings return to competition next weekend with the two-day Husky Classic on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 14-15) at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle. The 2020 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships will be the following week Feb. 21-22 at Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho. The WWU men's team is the defending conference indoor and outdoor champions (while also holding the cross country team title.).
