BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University Cheerleading program has announced its roster for the 2020-21 athletic seasons, with third-year head coach Jenny Johnson selecting 21 team members through a collection of innovative virtual tryout sessions.
 
The squad was selected after 50 prospective student-athletes signed up to try out for the team via virtual tryouts on the internet. The selected team members consists of 21 members, including four seniors, three juniors, eight sophomores and six freshman. Despite not being able to hold tryouts in person due to COVID-19 concerns, the program saw an increase of tryout participants from 35 last season to 50 this year.
 
"It was a lot of work to pull all this together, but it was a team effort and it went very well and we feel like we have a great group of energetic, positive and dynamic team members," said Johnson. "We will continue to bond and workout as a team through online sessions, but we are off to a good start despite the challenges we were faced. I am looking forward to this group leading our fans as they cheer on the Vikings in competition in the near future."
 
Johnson also announced sophomores Faith Morse and Ethan Huynh, and senior Korrena Standley will serve as the Team Leadership.
 
Johnson and second-year assistant coach Megan Newsted led the virtual tryouts, with prospective team members submitting videos over various digital platforms.
 
"We wanted to stick to our original date for the tryouts, and although we could not do them in person, we feel that the process worked very well and went smooth," added Johnson. "We are already sharing this process with other programs, increasing the awareness of WWU Cheer."
