Men's Golf in 3rd at Chico State Classic

Vikings played only 18 holes Monday due to high winds and tournament shortened to 36 holes

10/11/2021 4:36:00 PM

CORNING, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team battled very windy conditions in the first round Monday's Chico State Wildcat Classic at The Links at Rolling Hills.

Sustained winds of 20 miles per hour, gusting upwards of 30 MPH, caused the 10-team tournament to shorten Monday's planned 36 holes to only 18. The tournament will not feature a two-round, 36-hole format with the final round teeing off Monday morning at 8 am.

WWU is in 3rd place out of 10 teams, turning in a 28-over-par 316 on Monday. The Vikings trail tournament leader Stanislaus State by seven strokes and second-place Academy of Art by three strokes heading into Tuesday's round. Western is two stokes in front of Dominican (CA) and leads 5th-place Holy Names by four strokes. Tournament host Chico State is in 6th place

The Vikings have three players inside the top 15 in the 62-player field, with freshman Conrad Brown leading the way tied for 6th place following his 5-over-par 77. Brown played the eight par 4 holes at even par and made a pair of birdies in his round.

Senior Aidan Thain and junior Jordan Lee are tied for 14th place at 7-over-par 79.

Matthew Watkins of Academy of Art holds the lead for individual medalist shooting even-par 72, carding three birdies.

THE FINAL ROUND
Tuesday's final round will conclude the shortened 36-hole tournament, with a shotgun start scheduled for 8 am at The Links at Rolling Hills. WWU will tee off holes 1-3 while paired with Stanislaus State and Academy of Art.
