Vikings Finish 6th at Otter Invitational

Jordan Lee, Conrad Brown and Aidan Thain tie for 17th place in 91-player field

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Western Washington University men's golf team completed its fall season with a 6th-place finish out of 15 teams at the Otter Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament wrapped up play Tuesday at Bayonet Golf Course.

WWU opened the final round tied for 3rd place, but slipped a few spots on the leaderboard with a final round team score of 13-over-par 301 to finish at 38-over-par 902 for the tournament. Cal State San Bernardino won top team honors finishing at 25-over-par 889 for a one-stroke victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs. Tournament host Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State tied for 3rd place at 29-over-par 893.

"It wasn't the way we wanted to finish the fall. It wasn't bad but it left room for improvement as well," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "We got behind early, but I am pleased there was no give-up from the guys to finish the tournament. It's almost impossible to play aggressive on Bayonet. I thought the guys did a solid job of trying to stay patient this week."

WWU's top three finishers all tied for 17th place in the 91-player field, with senior Aidan Thain, junior Jordan Lee and freshman Conrad Brown completing the tournament at 10-over-par 226. All three players tied for the team-high for birdies in the tournament with eight each, and Lee recorded a eagle on the par 5 10th hole in Tuesday's final round.

Sophomore Cody Oakes shot the Vikings low round of the final round with a 1-over-par 73, featuring three birdies and a 1-under-par back nine. Oakes tied for 27th at 13-over-par 229. Freshman Cole Reynolds placed 26th at 12-over-par 228.

"Cody played a very clean round of golf today," added Bennett. "It very easily could have been a round under par."

Matthew Pennington of Cal State San Marcos won individual medalist honors turning in a 3-under-par 213 in the tournament, including a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to seal a four-stroke victory.

WWU completed the four-tournament fall schedule and will next be in action February 14-15 at the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge Golf Club in Vista, California.
