MONMOUTH, Ore. – Led by double-double performances from outside hitters
Gabby Gunterman and
Calley Heilborn, the No. 21 Western Washington University volleyball team defeated Western Oregon University in four sets Thursday evening in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
WWU improved to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in GNAC play with its third consecutive victory by defeating the Wolves 25-12, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17. Playing for the first time under interim head coach Traci Stephenson, the Wolves fought hard but dropped to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in conference play with their ninth consecutive loss.
"We had a great effort by everyone tonight against a very inspired WOU team," said WWU head coach
Diane Flick-Williams. "Kasey (Woodruff) was an anchor for us defensively and Gabby (Gunterman) had a great night on the pin. Keps (
Gabby Kepley) was the spark that we needed to pull away in the third set. We are a galaxy and everyone had a hand in tonight's victory."
The reigning GNAC Players of the Week lifted the Vikings to the victory, with
Gunterman providing 16 kills, 10 digs and a pair of service aces.
Heilborn tallied 13 kills, 16 digs and had three blocks. Junior middle
Olivia Fairchild added 10 kills and a team-best five blocks.
Sophomore libero
Kasey Woodruff anchored the defense with a match-high 21 digs and true freshman setter
Adele Holland notched a 47-assist, 11-dig double-double in her second collegiate match. Outside hitter
Gabby Kepley sparked the Vikings during the third-set comeback and finished with three kills and a pair of blocks.
