SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – The Western Washington University women's golf team battled the elements and a tough field in the first round of the Westminster Wasatch Invitational, but will head into the final round on Saturday near the top of the leaderboard in third place out of 14 teams.

WWU recorded a team score of 20-over-par 308, trailing tournament leader Biola by four strokes and second-place Colorado Christian by one stroke.

"The weather made for a long day on the course, taking over seven hours to complete the round due to lightning and rain," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "But the team was not shaken one bit. They showed a lot of grit and battled until the end. We'll look to have a strong finish to the tournament and the fall season tomorrow."

Junior Megan Billeter is tied for 4th place in the 75-player field after shooting a 2-over-par 74 on the 6,200-yeard par 72 layout.

"Megan played a very clean round of golf today," added Bennett. "It was great to see that play out of her."

All four of WWU's scoring players are inside the top 20 in the tournament, with junior Sarah Shea tied for 8th (+5, 77), freshman Jaclyn Yoo tied for 14th (+6, 78) and freshman Claire Moon tied for 20th (+7, 79).

Brady Turnquist of Biola holds the lead for individual medalist following her 3-under-par 69 that featured four birdies and one bogey.

WWU sits in third place, six strokes better than three teams – Colorado Mesa, MSU Denver, Northwest Nazarene – that are tied for fourth at 26-over-par 314. Tournament host Westminster College is in 10th place at 42-over-par 330.

The final round of the tournament will feature a shotgun start at 9 am MT/8 am PT, with the Vikings paired with Biola and Colorado Christian starting on the first three holes.
