BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University head softball head coach
Sheryl Gilmore has made a huge impact on the Viking softball program since being named head coach prior to the 2019 season.
Gilmore's outreach has now extended beyond the WWU campus and Viking Field with her selection to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) DII Head Coaches Committee.
Gilmore will be part of a select group of head coaches across the country that will represent all NCAA Division II conference in discussion of legislation, playing rules, championships, schedules and all other aspects that impact the game and season.
Gilmore officially started her new post in October and recently traveled to Las Vegas for the NFCA Coaches Convention. Recent discussions on the NFCA Head Coaches Committee has surrounded advocating for pushing the season back a week across NCAA Division II with concerns about student-athlete health coming back after break, better playing conditions and fewer cancelations due to weather.
"I am really excited to represent our conference and work to continue to elevate Division II softball and the student-athlete experience," said Gilmore.
In three seasons as the Vikings head coach, Gilmore has led the Vikings to a 60-44 record (.577 winning percentage). WWU is coming off a 23-14 record in 2021 that included winning the GNAC Championships Tournament and a trip to the NCAA Division II West Regional.
Prior to taking over as the head coach at her alma mater, Gilmore guided Edmonds College to a 106-60 (.639) record in four seasons, which included three trips to the playoffs and a North Region NWAC title in 2018. Her team's produced 19 All-NWAC North Region players, 10 NWAC All-Academic honorees and four selections to the NFCA All-America team.
The Vikings are scheduled to open the 30th season in program history with five games at the Concordia Kickoff Classic February 4-6 in Irvine, California. The complete 2022 WWU Softball schedule can be viewed online at
