Men's Golf Tied For 3rd After First Day of Saint Martin's West Regional Preview at The Home Course

Junior Aidan Thain continues solid early-season play tied for 5th at even-par 144

DUPONT, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's golf team returned to action Monday with the first two rounds at the Saint Martin's West Regional Preview on The Home Course.
 
The Vikings turned in a 36-hole team score of 11-over-par 587, shooting rounds of 293 (+5) in the morning and 294 (+6) in the afternoon. Western is tied for 3rd in the 11-team field playing on the par 72 layout that will serve as the postseason tournament host for both the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships (April 19-20) and the NCAA II West/South Central Super Regional Championship (May 6-8).
 
Junior co-captain Aidan Thain (Bellevue, WA/Sammamish) is tied for 5th in the 70-player field to lead the Vikings, turning in rounds of 1-under-par 71 and 1-over-par 73 to complete the day at even-par 144. Thain was crowned the GNAC Golfer of the Week following his season-opening tie for 3rd at the Nighthawks Invitational.
 
Junior Brody Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) is also in the top 20 in the field with a two-round score of 5-over-par 149 with rounds of 73 (+1) and 76 (+4).
 
Sophomore Jordan Lee (Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) and junior co-captain Devin Andrews (Kirkland, WA/Juanita) are tied for 22nd at 6-over-par 150.
 
Freshman Kyle Cooley made his Western debut playing as an individual, and is tied for 30th at 7-over-par 151 (77-74).
 
No. 12 nationally-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo leads the 11-team field completing the first two rounds at 3-under-par 573 with rounds of 280 (-8) and 293 (+5). WWU is tied with Western Mexico for 3rd place, three strokes behind tournament host Saint Martin's (+8, 584).
 
CSU-Pueblo's Andre Ni and Jamie Roberts are tied for the individual lead at 2-under-par 142 with both players shooting matching rounds of 1-under-par 71.
 
The 54-hole tournament wraps up play Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8 am.

ABOUT WWU MEN'S GOLF
The WWU men's golf team has an incredible streak of advancing to the NCAA Championships in each of the 21 seasons the program has competed at the NCAA Division II level dating back to the 1998-99 season, including a 3rd-place finish at the 2013 national championship. The program has produced 16 NCAA All-Americans and has won 9 of 12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships since the tournament debuted in 2008, including the 2019 title. The Vikings have also featured the GNAC Championships individual medalist in 8 of 12 tournaments, including 2018 champion Ethan Casto and 2019 champion Brody Bonfilio.
