DUPONT, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's golf team was primed to make a run up the leaderboard in the final round of the West Regional Preview at The Home Course on Tuesday, but mother nature had other plans.
After only a few groups got through the first few holes, heavy fog blanketed the area. Due to travel plans of a few of the teams, it was decided the final round of the Saint Martin's Regional Preview would be canceled.
The Vikings finished in a tie for 3
rd place in the 11-team tournament, logging a 36-hole score of 11-over-par 587.
Junior co-captain
Aidan Thain (Bellevue, WA/Sammamish) earned a spot on the all-tournament team tying for 5
th place in the 70-player field, finishing at even-par 144. Thain will be a frontrunner for winning a second consecutive GNAC Golfer of the Week award as the highest placing conference player in the tournament.
Junior
Brody Bonfilio (Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) is also in the top 20 in the field with a two-round score of 5-over-par 149 with rounds of 73 (+1) and 76 (+4).
Sophomore
Jordan Lee (Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) and junior co-captain
Devin Andrews (Kirkland, WA/Juanita) are tied for 22
nd at 6-over-par 150.
Freshman
Kyle Cooley made his Western debut playing as an individual, and is tied for 30
th at 7-over-par 151 (77-74). Second-year freshman
Drew Halili (Port Orchard, WA/South Kitsap) tied for 37
th at 8-over-par 152, which included a first-round score of even-par 72.
No. 12 nationally-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo won the team title finishing the first two rounds at 3-under-par 573 with rounds of 280 (-8) and 293 (+5). WWU tied with Western Mexico for 3
rd place, three strokes behind tournament host Saint Martin's (+8, 584).
CSU-Pueblo's Andre Ni and Jamie Roberts tied for the individual medalist honors at 2-under-par 142 with both players shooting matching rounds of 1-under-par 71 in the first two rounds.
UP NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS
The Vikings are back in action next week (Monday-Tuesday) at the Redhawk Invitational hosted by Seattle U. at Chambers Bay in University Place. WWU is scheduled to play 36 holes on March 29 (Monday) and the final 18 holes on March 30 (Tuesday) at the host site of the 2015 U.S. Open.
