BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Playing for the first time in nearly 500 days, the Western Washington University men's soccer team dropped its spring opener 1-0 to the University of Puget Sound Saturday night at Harrington Field.

Playing in its 12th game of the season, UPS (4-6-2) got a 61st minute goal from junior midfielder Cale Spence for the eventual game-winning score. The Vikings have had limited preseason practices leading up to the contest.

WWU sophomore goalkeeper Brandon Locke (Federal Way, WA/Todd Beamer) recorded four saves without allowing a goal and reserve Brandon Wolter (Vancouver, WA/Union) had one stop in the second half.

Spence broke the scoreless game with a goal at the 60:41 mark, taking a long pass from Marko Babiak into the box, where he fired a low crossing shot past Wolter for the lone score of the game.

UPS freshman goalkeeper Andrew Matheny made one save while recording the shutout.
