Vikings Battle Tough Field and Chambers Bay at Redhawk Invite

Aidan Thain and Jordan Lee tied for 47th at the Redhawk Invitational

3/29/2021 9:09:00 PM

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Competing against primarily a Division I field on one of the toughest courses in the Northwest, the Western Washington Vikings grinded through the first 36 holes of the Seattle U Redhawk Invitational Monday at Chambers Bay.

WWU finished the first two rounds at 33-over-par 601 with rounds of 296 (+12) in the morning and 305 (+21) in the afternoon.

Junior Aidan Thain (Bellevue, WA/Sammamish) and sophomore Jordan Lee (Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) lead the Viking contingent tied for 47th place in the 88-player field at 6-over-par 148.

Thain, the two-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week to open the spring season, fired rounds of 4-over-par in the morning and 2-over-par 73 in the afternoon.

Lee was 1-over-par in the morning round and came home with a 5-over-par 76.

Second-year freshman Nick Lasko (Clackamas, OR) made his season debut with a 9-over-par 151 (74-77).

"I felt like the guys battled today. The course played long, but they never gave up," said WWU Director of Golf Luke Bennett. "They all played some solid golf today, it was fun to watch. It's too bad we gave up so many shots at the end this afternoon, perhaps do to fatigue or just trying to press. We'll learn from it. The goal tomorrow is to stay committed, patient and to have some fun."

WWU is one of two NCAA II schools in the 15-team tournament, and holds a 14-stroke advantage over Saint Martin's. The 13 other schools all are from the NCAA Division I level.

The University of San Francisco put together a pair of impressive rounds to finish the first day at 20-under-par 548, which included a blistering 17-under-par 267 in the afternoon round. USF teammates Matthew Anderson (66-69=135) and Soren Lind (74-62=136) hold the top two spots in the individual medalist race. Soren's second-round 62 included a 9-birdie and bogey free round

The two-day, 54-hole tournament concludes Tuesday with the final round. A shotgun start will open the final 18 holes at 8 am.
