DUPONT, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's golf team is in 3^rd place through the first 36 holes of the 2021 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships played Monday on The Home Course.
 
The Vikings are one shot back of 2^nd-place Montana State Billings and 13 strokes behind tournament leader Saint Martin's (+6, 582). WWU shot team rounds of 298 (+10) in the morning and had a one shot improvement in the afternoon (+9, 297).
 
Second-year freshman Drew Halili leads the Viking contingent tied for 4^th place in the 20-player field at 2-over-par 146. The Port Orchard native capped his 36-hole day with an even-par 72, which included five birdies. Through the first two rounds Halili's seven birdies are tied for 2^nd-most among the field.
 
Sophomore Jordan Lee and freshman Cody Oakes are tied for 8^th place at 5-over-par 149, with juniors Brody Bonfilio (T-11^th, +7, 151) and Devin Andrews (T-13^th, +9, 153) rounding out the squad.
 
Tyler Fitchett of Saint Martin's holds the individual lead at 3-under-par 141, turning in rounds of 3-under-par 69 in the morning and even-par 72 in the afternoon. Fitchett holds a four-stroke lead over teammate Maxwell Turnquist (+1, 145) and Riley Kaercher of Montana State Billings.
 
WWU will have to climb the leaderboard to repeat as the conference champions, with the team winner of the tournament gaining an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championships that will be held at same venue (The Home Course) May 6-8. WWU is a nine-time winner of the GNAC Championships (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019) and has advanced to 21 consecutive NCAA II Championships and entered the postseason ranked No. 2 in the West Region.
